About the Opportunity

We are launching a brand-new, state-of-the-art cannabis dispensary in the heart of Downtown Newark, and we are seeking an experienced, motivated, and people-focused General Manager (GM) to lead the store from the ground up.

This is a rare opportunity to build the operation, culture, and customer experience from day one. You will oversee all retail operations, manage staff, shape customer service standards, and drive the financial success of the dispensary.

Job Summary

The General Manager is responsible for daily retail operations, financial performance, team leadership, compliance, and customer experience within the dispensary. This role oversees all aspects of store performance and ensures the dispensary operates with excellence, integrity, and compliance with NJ CRC regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Drive Results & Financial Performance

Achieve and exceed revenue, margin, and profitability goals.
Track and analyze daily/weekly/monthly sales performance.
Manage product menus, pricing strategies, promotions, and inventory mix.
Collaborate with ownership on revenue-driving initiatives.
Approve payroll, overtime, and time-off requests.
Monitor and reduce controllable expenses.
Analyze P&L statements and identify opportunities for margin growth.

Elevate Customer Experience

Ensure exceptional, friendly, and knowledgeable service.
Maintain the store’s non-negotiables (greeting, hospitality, refreshment setup, product education).
Lead by example on the sales floor.
Optimize customer flow (check-in, ordering kiosks, displays, queuing, curbside, pickup).
Resolve customer issues and de-escalate concerns professionally.
Respond to online reviews (Google, Leafly, Weedmaps) within 24 hours.
Implement loyalty programs and community engagement activities.
Coordinate vendor pop-ups, events, and local partnerships.

Operational Excellence

Oversee all daily opening and closing procedures.
Ensure accurate cash handling, reconciliation, and safe procedures.
Manage inventory, replenishment, shrink control, and vault organization.
Lead cycle counts, intake procedures, and METRC compliance.
Maintain operational checklists and SOP adherence.
Coordinate vendor deliveries and logistics.
Work with maintenance teams for repairs and upkeep.
Ensure merchandising standards, signage, displays, and cleanliness.

Market & Competitive Awareness

Conduct weekly competitive menu and pricing reviews.
Complete store walks of nearby competitors (5–10 mile radius).
Identify trends and recommend strategy adjustments.
Communicate local insights to ownership.

Lead & Develop Talent

Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard staff.
Train budtenders and leads on service, compliance, SOPs, and sales.
Conduct performance reviews and succession planning.
Build a positive and engaged team culture.
Manage scheduling to balance labor cost and service levels.
Ensure clear communication through daily huddles and regular meetings.
Partner with HR/ownership on employee relations.

Compliance & Safety

Ensure adherence to NJ CRC cannabis regulations, local laws, and safety requirements.
Enforce company policies, SOPs, and labor law requirements.
Maintain audit readiness at all times (State & internal audits).
Build strong relationships with local authorities and inspectors.
Verify all staff maintain valid NJ Registered Agent Cards.
Ensure proper METRC usage, reporting, and documentation.
Maintain a safe, secure workplace with proper incident reporting.

Strategic Growth & Innovation

Develop local marketing and community programs.
Collaborate on promotional calendars and in-store concepts.
Pilot new retail ideas (events, sampling, merchandising tests, loyalty upgrades).
Provide ongoing feedback to ownership on growth opportunities.

Qualifications & Skills

Bachelor’s degree or 7+ years of supervisory or retail management experience.
Cannabis retail experience a must
Experience running dispensary is a must
Strong understanding of POS systems, inventory control, and retail KPIs.
Must be at least 21 years old.
Excellent communication, leadership, and customer service skills.
Strong work ethic and a positive, team-oriented attitude.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of NJ CRC compliance rules, local ordinances, safety standards, and SOPs.
Must pass all required background checks.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a NJ Registered Agent Card.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive.

Working Environment

This role requires daily in-store presence.

You will oversee front-of-house and back-of-house areas, including check-in, sales floor, vault, receiving, and managerial offices.
