Assistant Teacher Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Purpose:
This job description applies to all assistant teachers at the British International School of Boston and all such staff who may be required to undertake the types of duties referred to under the direction of the leadership team. However, the balance of the different types of duties will vary from class-to-class dependent upon the age and needs of the children.
The job purpose is to work in partnership and be complementary to the needs of the students. Assistant teachers are expected to play a full part in implementing the planned curriculum for the benefit of the students with whom they have contact.
Assistant teachers may be given responsibility of leading a class or groups of students from time to time. Assistant teachers may also be required to work with groups or individual students outside of the classroom when necessary.
Working hours for 2026/27 - Mon to Friday: 7:45am – 4:15pm
Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks:
- To work and share within the life of the school according to the above job purpose.
- To participate fully in the development, safety, health and welfare of students.
- To work with individual or small groups of students on a variety of activities, including assisting teachers with the observation, assessment and recording of students’ progress if required.
- To foster positive and appropriate working relationships with colleagues, students, parents and outside agencies.
- To complete weekly clubs and contribute to school’s wider needs.
- To cover a teacher when they are unavailable at short notice under the direction of the leadership team and Head of Phase.
- To be available to cover any clubs and duties at short notice under the direction of the leadership team and Head of Phase.
TASKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB DESCRIPTION
General Classroom Responsibilities
Assist the lead teacher in arranging the learning environment, including assembling and putting materials on bulletin boards and/or other classroom learning displays and aiding in keeping such displays current and of a high standard.
Contribute to curriculum development, assisting in providing a stimulating environment and taking responsibility for specific activities.
Maintain discipline in accordance with the school’s procedures and encourage good practice regarding punctuality, behaviour, standards of work and homework.
Organizing materials and equipment for use in the classroom(s) and taking responsibility for its care and maintenance.
Assisting with the organization and neatness of the classroom and encouraging children’s participation in these tasks.
Supervising students’ breaks and lunch periods as part of the duty rotation.
Accompany student’s to the restroom when requested and to assist in the needs of the student to include changing the child if necessary.
Assist the lead teacher with the supervision of students during non-instructional times, such as emergency drills, assemblies, cafeteria, restrooms, field trips, hallways, playground and bus loading / unloading activities.
Read to students, listen to students read and observe students’ reading abilities as assigned.
Undertake support activities for the lead teacher as required, e.g. photocopying, preparation of materials, mounting displays.
General Teaching Responsibilities
Establish positive relationships with students.
Ensure that all students, whatever their cultural, racial or religious background, gender and identity, are offered equal opportunities and access to the curriculum.
Aid the school and lead teachers in guiding the development of students’ social behaviour and attitudes.
Support students with significant development needs, e.g. cognitive ability, emotional and behavior needs, learning skills, etc. as directed.
Providing extra help to students with specific needs or those for whom English is not their first language.
Share in the responsibility for the safety, health and welfare of students.
Take responsibility for delivering learning activities with small groups or individuals who would benefit from a different learning approach as agreed.
Use a variety of teaching methods to:
i. Match approach to content, structure information, present a set of key ideas and use appropriate vocabulary.
ii. Use effective questioning, listen carefully to students, and give attention to errors and misconceptions.
Select appropriate learning resources and develop study skills through library, IT and other sources.
Take account of students’ needs by providing structured learning opportunities which develop the areas of learning identified in NAE policies and particularly the foundations for English and Math.
Encourage students to think and talk about their learning and develop self-control and independence, concentrate and persevere and listen attentively; using a variety of teaching strategies which involved planned adult intervention, first-hand experience and play and talk as a vehicle for learning.
Undertake assessment of students as requested by the lead teacher.
Grade, assess and monitor students’ work under direction of the lead teacher.
Assist in maintaining class records and contribute to reports on pupil progress and development as directed by the lead teacher.
Evaluate own teaching critically to improve effectiveness.
Cover and Extra Curricular Responsibilities
Supervise and teach students when the lead teacher is not available under the direction of the leadership team and Head of Phase.
Take a minimum of one weekly club outlined by the club leader and schedule.
Carry out regular break and lunch duties as directed by Head of Phase.
Be readily available to take on additional break or lunch duties as directed by Head of Phase.
General School Responsibilities
Attend parent’s evenings, open houses and other additional out of school hour’s events as directed by the Head of Phase/Leadership Team.
Participating in staff meetings and in-house training activities as and when required under the direction of the leadership team.
Participate in meetings at school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organization of the school, including pastoral arrangements.
Contribute to the whole school’s planning activities.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, parents/carers or outside agencies.
Attend and actively participate in professional development activities and reviews.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Maintain good order and positive discipline among students in accordance with the policies of NAE and the school.
Safeguard students’ health and safety both when they are authorized to be on school premises and when they are engaged in authorized school activities elsewhere.
Ensure compliance with all NAE and school policies, with respect to Health and Safety and Safeguarding.
Ensure courses for child protection and safeguarding are up to date and renewals completed in a timely manner.
Always maintain confidentiality in respect of school-related matters to prevent disclosure of confidential or sensitive information.
