Full Job Description

State Garden is looking for a Maintenance Mechanic to join our Maintenance department! Located in Chelsea, MA, State Garden has been in the produce business for over 75 years and we are proud of the high quality products we sell. What started out as a family-run celery business has transformed into the company we are today – a top supplier of organic and conventional tender leaf greens, spinach and celery hearts.

The Maintenance Technician is a skilled position who is responsible for installs, maintenance, and repairs of machinery equipment, physical structures (i.e. facility, buildings, etc.), and pipe, and electrical systems in an industrial environment.

Shift:

Monday through Saturday 2PM to 10:30PM
Overtime and weekends as required

Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs routine preventive maintenance by inspecting and testing machinery equipment in the production facility; Oils and lubricants moving parts on machines to ensure effective performance.
Detects equipment and machinery malfunctions and discusses machine operation with supervisors, managers, or others maintenance workers to diagnose problems or repair machines.
May train lower-level technicians on inspections, assembly, disassembly, installation, repairs, and preventive maintenance tasks.
Dismantles machinery and removes/replaces defective parts; installs new equipment or repairs parts.
Assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment; repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment.
Repairs and maintains physical structures of facilities; Ensures that all maintenance equipment is in good working order.
Reads, interprets, and follows instructions in operator and maintenance manuals.
Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, schematics to identify parts, part numbers, and necessary parts in preparation of repairs, rebuilds, and preventive maintenance.
Ability to safely operate hand and power tools as well as cleaning equipment.
Utilizes CMMS system for filing work order requests and work order completions; Records and reports worn and damaged parts and equipment.
Follows appropriate process for obtaining parts with focus on maintaining proper inventory.
Complies with all food and human safety and health regulations.
Responds to emergency calls for maintenance and repairs.
May work with and maintains relationships with contracted vendors; Reports needs from vendors to Supervisor.
Cleans, organizes, and maintains shop work areas; Inspects and cleans each area they perform repairs in the facilities.
May utilize powered industrial trucks or self-elevating work platform equipment.
May use company maintenance vehicle to pick up parts.
May utilize multimeter to check continuity and troubleshooting.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Although this position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, the position works in a collaborative environment and may have to plan and delegate tasks to department personnel.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and other manuals and documents.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
Ability to quickly implement strategic solutions to mechanical issues within the plant.
May be required to work outside normal work hours.
Knowledge of human and food safety.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent time management.
Knowledge of programming terminology required.
Knowledge of basic electrical skills/terminology.
Knowledge of basic Microsoft Office products (i.e. Outlook).
Powered Industrial Truck certification.
Ability to operate a company vehicle with valid driver’s license.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Technical or trade school preferred.
5-7 years of related experience.
Knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical, PLC, HVAC, plumbing, and carpentry required; certifications or licensing within these areas of expertise preferred.
