Lead the financial operations of a mission-driven healthcare organization at an important point in its growth and modernization.

The Confidential Search Company has been engaged to recruit a Controller for an independent Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with offices in Boston. The organization is a hospital-licensed outpatient facility and is affiliated with a major Boston teaching hospital. The Controller will be based at the South Boston location, with on-site parking and convenient access to the T.

This is a high-impact opportunity for an experienced healthcare finance leader to strengthen financial operations, advance grant-management excellence, and help complete the implementation of Sage Intacct and a new payroll system.

The Role

The Controller oversees the financial operations of an organization with approximately $60 million in annual revenue including $10 million in HRSA, DPH, and other grants. The position safeguards financial integrity and regulatory compliance while ensuring that leaders have timely, accurate information for sound operational and strategic decisions.

Core Responsibilities: Accounting, Reporting & Controls

· Direct general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable reporting, payroll, cash management, and fixed assets.

· Produce accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP, and ensure timely month-end and year-end closes.

· Manage the annual audit, coordinate with external auditors, and maintain strong financial policies and internal controls.

Grant Financial Management

· Oversee financial administration for federal, state, local, private foundation, and other grant-funded programs, including Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awards.

· Ensure compliance with HRSA requirements, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), Federal Financial Reports, Notices of Award, and other grantor guidelines.

· Monitor budgets, expenditures, drawdowns, reimbursements, accounts receivable reporting, reporting deadlines, cost allocation, time-and-effort reporting, and allowable-cost determinations.

· Partner with program and department leaders on grant budgets, spending, financial reports, renewals, applications, forecasts, budget narratives, and sustainability analyses.

· Coordinate grant-related audits, site visits, and compliance reviews; reconcile the general ledger, grant-management systems, and required reports; and advise executive leadership on performance, opportunities, and compliance risk.

· Manage the Grant Manager’s work.

Budgeting, Planning & Decision Support

· Lead annual operating and capital budgeting, monitor results against budgets and forecasts, and provide meaningful variance analysis and recommendations.

· Develop financial models and analyses that support strategic planning and executive decision-making.

Technology & Finance Modernization

· Complete implementation of Sage Intacct ERP system and the organization’s new payroll system, then optimize their use.

· Advance ERP, budgeting, business intelligence, grant-management, dashboard, automation, and analytics capabilities in partnership with IT and operational leaders.

· Evaluate emerging tools—including AI-assisted reporting, predictive analytics, and workflow automation—to improve accuracy, efficiency, and financial visibility.

Compliance, Risk & Leadership

· Support compliance with healthcare financial reporting standards and Medicare, Medicaid, HRSA, and other funding requirements; maintain effective risk-management practices and corrective action plans.

· Supervise and mentor accounting and finance staff, building a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, customer service, grant expertise, analytical capability, and technology fluency.

Candidate ProfileRequired Background

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

· Seven to ten or more years of progressive accounting and financial-management experience, including at least three to five years in healthcare, a community health center, a hospital, or nonprofit healthcare finance.

· Significant experience managing federal and state grants and overseeing organizations with annual revenue above $40 million.

· Strong command of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, healthcare reimbursement, grant compliance, Uniform Guidance, financial analysis, forecasting, and internal controls.

· Demonstrated experience with ERP systems, financial-reporting software, business-intelligence platforms, and finance-process improvement.

· Experience in monthly, quarterly, and annual closings; and financial reporting.

· Excellent leadership, communication, and project-management skills.

Highly Valued

· CPA preferred; master’s degree such as an MBA, MHA, or related degree preferred.

· Direct FQHC and HRSA grant experience.

· Experience with Sage Intacct or comparable platforms.

· Advanced Excel and experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar analytics tools.

· Experience leading digital transformation, finance modernization, and AI-assisted reporting or process automation initiatives.
