Full Job Description

Experienced Site Work Laborer / Excavator Operator

We are a busy Site Work and Foundation Contractor looking for an experienced, hands-on Site Work Laborer / Excavator Operator who understands all phases of residential site work — from demolition and excavation through underground utilities, drainage, and final grading.

This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone who can work independently when needed, understands residential site development, can read civil engineering plans, establish and check grades, and safely operate an excavator.

Responsibilities

Demolition of existing houses, foundations, and structures using an excavator
Excavation for new construction homes, including foundation digs
Backfilling foundations
Sub-slab preparation, including grading and placing crushed stone before basement slab pours
Water and sewer cut and caps
Installation of new water and sewer services
Cultec drainage system installation
Installation of roof gutter drainage systems and underground gutter connections
Installation of perforated drainage pipe
Sump pump pit and sump pump discharge/drainage installation
Curb cuts and associated drainage work
Trench drain installation
Sidewalk preparation, including grading and sub-base preparation
Rough and finish grading to prepare sites for landscaping
Grading sites to required elevations and topography according to civil engineering/site plans
Digging test pits
General site labor, including pipe laying, grade checking, hand digging, and site cleanup
Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform routine greasing and maintenance checks
Identify equipment problems and report repair needs promptly
Follow all safety protocols, including Dig Safe markouts and proper trench safety procedures
Collaborate with the crew, other trades, supervisors, and inspectors to keep projects moving and on schedule
Maintain accurate records of equipment hours and daily site activities

Required Experience & Qualifications

Valid Massachusetts Class 2A Hoisting Engineer License
Proven experience safely and efficiently operating an excavator
Experience performing water and sewer cut and caps
Experience installing new residential water and sewer services
Experience installing Cultec drainage systems
Experience installing gutter drainage, perforated pipe, sump pump drainage, curb cuts, and other site drainage systems
Must know how to read and understand civil engineering plans and residential site plans
Must be able to read existing and proposed grades, contours, elevations, slopes, and site topography from civil plans
Must know how to properly set up and use a rotary laser level to establish, transfer, and check grades and elevations
Experience with residential demolition and new construction site work
Knowledge of Dig Safe procedures and trench safety
Ability to perform foundation excavation, backfilling, drainage, utility work, and rough and finish grading
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Physically able to perform demanding outdoor labor in all seasons
Mechanical aptitude with the ability to identify equipment issues and perform basic upkeep
Strong work ethic — dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a crew

Preferred Qualifications

OSHA 10 certification
CDL license — a plus for transporting equipment
Experience operating additional equipment, including skid steers, dozers, rollers, loaders, and backhoes
Familiarity with CAT, Komatsu, John Deere, or similar construction equipment

What We're Looking For

The right candidate is more than just an excavator operator. We need someone who understands the complete site-work process and knows how to take a residential project from demolition and excavation through utilities, drainage, backfill, and final grading.

You should be comfortable reading a civil site plan, determining elevations and grades, using a rotary laser, installing water, sewer, and drainage systems correctly, and working with the crew to complete jobs safely and efficiently.

Experience with water/sewer work, drainage systems, civil plans, and grading is important for this position.

Pay: $27.29 - $45.00 per hour
