Full Job Description

The Health Connector is seeking a highly motivated, knowledgeable, and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to perform key accounting activities related to monthly close, account reconciliations, premium billing and cash activity, journal entries, and audit schedules. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting knowledge, intermediate Excel skills, sound judgment, and the ability to reconcile data across systems, identify discrepancies, and maintain organized supporting documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

Prepare, analyze, and support monthly journal entries, including cash activity, accruals, prepaid assets and amortization, fixed asset capitalization, write-offs and depreciation, reclassifications, and other month-end close entries. Ensure entries are accurate, properly supported, and recorded in the appropriate accounting period.
Reconcile monthly premium billing activity for the Health Connector’s Non-Group and Health Connector for Business (Small Group) programs, including premium amounts billed, cash receipts, refunds, adjustments, and remittances to health plans. Analyze cash variances, including timing differences between bank activity and vendor/system reporting, and ensure activity is accurately supported.
Analyze general ledger accounts and perform assigned monthly bank and balance sheet reconciliations, including identifying and documenting reconciling items, researching variances, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring balances are accurate, supported, and completed in accordance with the monthly close timeline.
Prepare wire transfer documentation ,for secondary approval, for remittances to health plans, internal bank transfers, and other approved wire disbursements. Ensure wire requests are accurate, properly supported, and approved in accordance with internal controls.
Prepare and submit the monthly CCTF funding request, including reconciling and compiling support for amounts owed to the Health Connector and ensuring the request is accurate, documented, and submitted timely.
Review and support Beyond Plan Year refund activity, including obtaining the monthly refund report from the EPB vendor, validating refund amounts against internal reporting, and ensuring refunds are processed accurately and in accordance with established business rules.
Maintain organized and audit-ready documentation to support journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting, and audit requests.
Support the monthly close and financial reporting process by preparing assigned schedules and analyzing changes in account balances and financial results, including month-over-month and budget-to-actual variances.
Identify, analyze, and record monthly accruals by reviewing budget information, invoices, contracts, and other available support to ensure expenses are recorded in the appropriate accounting period. Coordinate with the budget team as needed to confirm completeness of accruals.
Follow established accounting policies, procedures, SOPs, and internal controls, including maintaining proper documentation, obtaining required approvals, and ensuring assigned work is performed accurately and consistently.
Collaborate closely with the budgeting team and cross-functional departments to support project implementations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and delivering accurate, timely financial insights.
Perform ad-hoc reporting and analysis and other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualification

Associate’s degree in accounting or related field and approximately 1-3 years of relevant accounting or financial analysis experience preferred.
Experience with preparing month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Working knowledge of US GAAP and standard business practices.
Intermediate Excel skills required,
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, meet deadlines, and identify when issues require research, escalation, or follow-up.
Analytical, organizational, and communication skills,
Familiarity with ADP or similar payroll software preferred.
Familiarity with QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software preferred.
Experience with payroll processing and accounts payable preferred.
Ability to organize and maintain electronic documentation so records can be efficiently stored, retrieved, and shared.

The Health Connector is operating on a hybrid work arrangement with 2 days in the downtown Boston office and 3 days working from home.
