Position Summary
PASCALL is a growing multidisciplinary medical device company building an FDA-cleared, EEG-based brain state monitoring platform — a wearable EEG sensor paired with an Android tablet application — now in active clinical use. As our platform matures and enters more hospitals, we are hiring a locally based Software Engineer to strengthen the software that powers it and to build the features that connect it to the clinical environment around it. We are looking for a self-motivated engineer who treats an open problem as an invitation — someone who invents, prototypes, and champions ideas that create measurable business value.
This is a hands-on role based in Cambridge, embedded with our software team and working closely with our CEO, our product team, and our hardware/device team. You'll work across the platform's backend and extend it outward into the hospital's ecosystem: carrying EEG-derived data into vital-signs middleware and the EHR, as well as making our device a well-behaved citizen on hospital IT networks. Because the team is small and much of the roadmap is still being written, you will have unusual latitude to shape what gets built, to bring creative approaches to problems that have no established answer, and to argue for the bets you believe in.
Because our software runs inside customer environments, aspects of this role are customer-facing. You'll be working directly with hospital IT, clinical engineering and clinical users to scope integrations, pass security reviews, support deployments and go-lives and troubleshoot issues in the field, feeding what you learn back into the product. This is not a sales or support role; it is an engineering role whose work ships into live clinical settings.
Responsibilities & Opportunities
- Build and Strengthen the Backend: Contribute to PASCALL's backend: the APIs serving the Android client and the data/image-processing and waveform-detection pipeline. Improve its reliability, robustness, and observability.
- Support Customers in the Field: Act as a technical counterpart to customers and clinical engineering teams during integration scoping, security review, deployment, and go-live; investigate issues arising in live clinical environments and translate site feedback into product improvements.
- Drive Quality & Reliability: Strengthen testing, defect prevention, and regression coverage across backend services and integrations.
- Solve Hard Problems: Investigate and root-cause complex, intermittent issues across the backend and the app/device data path, working hand-in-hand with the hardware/device team. Bring inventive, unconventional approaches when the obvious path is blocked.
- Support Algorithm & Data Workflows: Build backend and data infrastructure that supports the algorithm team's modeling, validation, and data-quality work.
- Support Regulated Development: Contribute verification, validation, and documentation for design controls and FDA submissions as the software lifecycle matures toward medical-device standards (IEC 62304, ISO 14971), in partnership with Quality and regulatory.
- Innovate on the Product: Prototype new ideas quickly, propose approaches nobody has asked for, and think past the current architecture about what the platform could do for clinicians, hospitals, and the business.
- Connect the Device to the Clinical Environment: Design and build the integrations that carry EEG-derived parameters from the PASCALL monitor into hospital systems — vital-signs middleware and the EHR (e.g., Epic) — using healthcare interoperability standards (HL7 v2, FHIR) and clean, well-documented interfaces and data contracts.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent professional experience.
Experience and Skills
- 2–5 years of industry experience building commercial, production-level software (backend or full-stack); startup experience strongly preferred.
- Creativity and independent drive: a track record of thinking outside the box — finding a simpler path, repurposing a tool in an unexpected way, or solving something others had accepted as fixed — and the self-motivation to pursue it without being asked.
- Versatility and initiative: you can take an ambiguous, high-level objective, scope it yourself, and run it to completion — and you look for the next problem rather than waiting to be assigned one. You are comfortable operating without a detailed spec, and you judge your own work by the value it creates rather than the tasks it closed.
- Strong coder in Python and Java at minimum (C++, C#, or other languages a plus).
- Experience connecting systems or devices across a network — designing and consuming APIs, defining data contracts and understanding authentication and network security fundamentals.
- Solid command of testing, debugging, and practical design patterns; a systematic, root-cause approach to problems.
- Clear communicator, comfortable working directly with external technical stakeholders such as hospital IT and clinical engineering teams.
- Documentation rigor: the discipline to document interfaces, decisions, and test evidence precisely — these become part of a regulated product record.Technical Background (Preferred)
- Evidence of building something of your own — a side project, an internal tool that spread, a patent, a publication, or a product idea you took from sketch to something real.
- Experience with Firebase/GCP or AWS managed services, and with cloud architecture more broadly.
- Exposure to machine learning workflows, DevOps/MLOps practices, or physiological/clinical monitoring data.
- Comfort using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) responsibly in a regulated environment.
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with healthcare interoperability standards — HL7 v2, FHIR, and related messaging/transport patterns.
- Direct experience integrating a device or software product with hospital systems (Philips Capsule, Epic Bridges/Interconnect, Cerner, or similar), or familiarity with clinical IT governance and hospital security review processes.
