JOB OVERVIEW
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Embedded Systems Engineer with a strong electrical engineering test and debug background, focused on system-level power characterization, battery characterization, and power-performance optimization on Qualcomm-based or similar complex embedded platforms.
This role is hardware-first and emphasizes embedded firmware, electrical measurements, battery behavior analysis, lab-based investigation, and power-model validation. The role requires enough Linux and/or Android system software knowledge to perform first-order analysis of software-driven power and performance issues. This is not a pure Android framework role.
The engineer will work hands-on with product schematics, power delivery networks, battery subsystems, lab instruments, structured test matrices, power models, logs, traces, and firmware behavior to explain real-world power and battery behavior across operating modes.
Responsibilities:
- Electrical & Power Measurement / Debug (Primary Focus)
- Lead hands‑on power measurement and debug activities, including current, voltage, rail‑level, and transient analysis using oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads, and bench supplies.
- Work directly from product schematics to understand power architecture, sequencing, and power‑delivery behavior.
- Build and execute structured test matrices covering operating modes, workloads, power states, and environmental conditions.
- Diagnose power anomalies by correlating electrical measurements with system behavior, thermal response, and software activity.
- Proactively investigate unexpected power drains, instability, or peak‑power events.
- Android Power & Thermal Engineering
- Analyze and optimize Android system power consumption across active, idle, sleep, suspend, and deep-sleep states.
- Investigate Android Power Manager, wakelocks, suspend/resume behavior, CPU idle states, DVFS, thermal management, and battery usage patterns.
- Debug power-related issues spanning:
- Android Framework
- System Services
- HAL Layers
- Device Drivers
- Linux Kernel
- Firmware
- Analyze BatteryStats, dumpsys outputs, Perfetto traces, systrace data, kernel traces, logcat logs, and vendor diagnostics.
- Correlate Android software behavior with measured electrical power consumption.
- Identify and resolve excessive battery drain, wakeup events, thermal throttling, and performance bottlenecks
- Power Characterization & Lab Validation
- Design power measurement setups using:
- NI DAQ systems
- Monsoon power monitors
- Oscilloscopes
- Power analyzers
- Current probes
- Electronic loads
- Bench supplies
- Execute:
- Peak current characterization
- Sleep current characterization
- Battery-life measurements
- Thermal characterization
- Performance-per-watt analysis
- Power budget validation
- Correlate electrical measurements with:
- Android traces
- Linux logs
- Firmware traces
- Thermal data
- Performance counters
- Battery Characterization & Power Modelling
- Battery Modeling & Power Systems Analysis
- Perform battery characterization including:
- Charge/discharge analysis
- Current consumption profiling
- Battery life estimation
- Capacity validation
- Thermal impact analysis
- Develop and validate:
- System power models
- Power budgets
- Battery-life models
- Energy consumption models
- Correlate measured results against predicted power models and identify deviations.
- Present actionable recommendations to hardware, firmware, Android, and systems teams.
- Embedded Firmware & System Software (Supporting Focus)
- Perform first‑order investigation of software and firmware contributors to power and performance issues.
- Debug and analyze power behavior across:
- Embedded firmware (MCU / peripheral FW)
- Linux kernel and device drivers
- Android system services and power management layers (as needed)
- Understand and reason about CPU governors, idle states, suspend/resume behavior, and firmware‑controlled power features.
- Work closely with firmware and platform teams to align hardware power intent with software behavior.
- Power Modeling & Analysis
- Consume, interpret, and reason about system power models and budgets.
- Validate measured data against expected power models and identify deviations.
- Communicate findings clearly to EE, HW, FW, and system teams.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Act as a technical bridge between electrical engineering, hardware design, battery engineering, firmware, system software, validation, and customer-facing teams.
- Support platform bring-up, lab characterization, EVT/DVT activities, factory investigations, customer escalations, and design-for-power improvements.
- Document measurements, assumptions, models, deviations, open issues, and recommended corrective actions in a structured and review-ready format.
