This is a fixed term position ending December 31, 2028.
Definition:
Tech I: Perform a variety of entry-level skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, including the operation and maintenance of various specialized equipment.
Tech II: Supports the City’s Urban Forestry Program which includes the health, safety and aesthetics of public trees within the City. Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, including the operation and maintenance of various specialized equipment.
Principal Duties:
Tech I:
· This is an entry-level position structured to train staff to assist with pruning, maintenance, and removal of City-owned trees and other vegetation in City parks, greenways, roadways, and City-facilities.
· Plant, stake, guy, mulch, and water shrubs and trees.
· Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools. Operate a chipper, stump grinder, water truck, skid steer, and/or tractors.
· Perform snow removal utilizing hand tools and motorized equipment.
· Assist with inquiries and complaints from the public related to sick, damaged, or hazardous trees and shrubs.
· Learn to identify tree species and inspect for health and safety.
· Assist in maintaining a tree inventory.
· Attends trainings, seminars, and meetings as required.
Tech II:
· Prune, remove and maintain City-owned trees and other vegetation with the use of rope and saddle, as well as an aerial lift truck at heights up to 70 feet.
· Respond to tree maintenance needs and storm damage concerns.
· Plant, water, and mulch trees.
· Assist in the identification of insect and disease issues and treat when directed by the City Forester.
· Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools. Operate various-sized trucks, aerial lift, grappler, chipper, stump grinder, water truck, skid steer, tractors, and tree treatment equipment.
· Performs tree maintenance operations in compliance with industry standards and specifications.
· Respond and resolve tree-related customer service requests.
· Perform snow removal utilizing hand tools and motorized equipment.
· Perform level one tree risk assessments for sick, damaged, or hazardous trees.
· Identify tree species common to the Front Range, and assist in the maintenance of the tree inventory, and record daily work.
· Assist with educational programs such as Arbor Day. Provide information to the public relative to tree care and arboricultural practices.
· May lead or work on a 2-4 person crew for technical urban forestry functions for tree care operations, and may oversee the direct the work of temporary employees
Working Environment:
Work is performed outside most of the time, under varied and extreme weather conditions. Ability to work in environmental conditions which may include excessive noise; dust, pollen, gases, oils, solvents, and/or chemicals including a variety of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Work requires considerable physical effort including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, pulling, pushing, walking, and standing for extended periods of time. Work also involves the ability to perform duties at a variety of heights. Work may be performed on weekends; overtime and adjusted schedules may also be required. The candidate for this position must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to do the job.
Qualifications:
Tech I: Prior arborist, horticultural, or landscape experience is preferred but not required.
Special Qualifications: Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Possession of or ability to obtain First Aid certifications within first 6 months of employment. Completion of or ability to complete defensive driving training within the first 6 months of employment.
Tech II: A minimum of 24 months experience comparable to an Arborist Technician I. Completion of defensive driving training plus additional related training approved by the Division within the first 6 months of employment.
Special Qualifications: Possession of or the ability to obtain the following licensing and/or certification within six months of hire:
- A valid class "B" CDL with airbrake endorsement
- Electrical Hazards Awareness Program (EHAP)
- First Aid and CPR Certification
