Job Title: Tax Senior

Position summary

The Tax Senior is responsible for managing a portfolio of monthly accounting clients and delivering high-quality tax compliance and advisory services. This role oversees year-round client tax needs—monthly coordination, projections and estimates, tax planning, and preparation/review of federal and state returns—while also reviewing other tax returns outside of assigned monthly engagements. The Tax Senior leads client communication, drives process improvements, and supports the development of staff.

Key responsibilities

Client portfolio leadership (monthly accounting clients)

Serve as primary tax contact for assigned monthly accounting clients, ensuring a proactive, year-round tax experience.
Coordinate with accounting/bookkeeping team(s) to ensure monthly financials support accurate tax reporting and planning.
Own engagement timelines, deliverables, and client communications for assigned accounts.

Tax compliance and filing

Prepare and/or review federal, state, and local income tax returns (individual, business, and trust/estate as applicable to the firm’s client base).
Ensure accurate and timely filings, extensions, and related elections; oversee workpapers and documentation standards.
Identify and resolve tax issues, notices, and correspondence; recommend next steps and communicate clearly to clients.

Projections, estimates, and planning

Prepare tax projections and scenario analyses; translate financial results into expected tax outcomes.
Calculate and communicate quarterly estimates and annual extension payments.
Lead tax planning initiatives: entity structuring considerations, compensation planning, deductions/credits, multi-state considerations, and year-end strategies.
Deliver actionable recommendations and document planning positions and assumptions.

Review and quality control (outside engagements)

Review tax returns prepared by other team members (including clients not in the monthly accounting portfolio) for technical accuracy, completeness, and risk.
Provide clear review notes and technical guidance; ensure consistent quality and firm standards.

Required qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
CPA license (preferred) or EA preferred.
5+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting or a client-service environment.
Demonstrated experience managing multiple clients and deadlines simultaneously.
Strong tax technical and research skills; comfort making and documenting judgment calls.
Proficiency with tax and accounting technology (tax prep software, document management, Excel); ability to learn new systems quickly.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain tax concepts to non-tax audiences.
