Full Job Description

This is responsible paralegal support work of moderate and advanced difficulty, often of a confidential nature, including various office duties in the Legal Department. Work involves providing support to the City Attorney, Assistant City Attorneys, and other Legal Department personnel as assigned. Responsibilities include preparing, proofreading and editing legal documents and correspondence; assisting with hearing and trial preparations including pleadings, motions, and discovery; scheduling hearings, depositions, mediations; maintaining calendars; researching and compiling records and related data from a variety of sources; e-filing in state and federal courts, and maintaining paper and electronic files. Work requires a highly motivated individual capable of managing assignments independently and who can exercise sound, independent judgment and discretion while screening calls and office visitors, receiving complaints, conducting public relations activities and answering routine questions regarding organizational programs, policies and procedures.

Salary: $27.90 - $43.93 Hourly DOQ

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

Have a high school diploma or GED equivalency.

Have two (2) or more years’ experience in personal injury litigation.

Have extensive professional experience performing word processing and implementing professional office practices.

Be highly competent in the use of business English and spelling, legal terminology, and research methods and techniques.

Have experience with state and federal e-filing systems.

Be able to maintain moderately complex office records and to prepare accurate reports from file records and materials.

Be willing and able to learn new material and to assume full ownership over assigned work.

Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

Possess a valid Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree.

Possess Florida Registered Paralegal status or Certified Legal Assistant status, recognized and approved by the NALA, NFPA, or other nationally recognized certifying organization.

Have knowledge of Florida Rules of Civil Procedure and Florida Rules of Appellate Procedure.

Have knowledge of general legal, administrative and procedural policies and regulations pertaining to city government including knowledge of general municipal operations and organizations.

Are skilled in the use of software products employed by the City Attorney’s Office, including Westlaw, LEXIS, and E-Filing.
