POSITION SUMMARY

The Livestock Handler is responsible for the daily care, feeding, and preparation of all animals associated with Shepherd of the Hills productions and the petting zoo. This role ensures the health, safety, and well-being of all animals throughout each day and supports the smooth operation of live shows by preparing and presenting animals for performances. The Livestock Handler works closely with show staff, farm management, and guest experience teams to deliver a safe and memorable experience for both animals and guests.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Animal Care & Daily Husbandry

Feed and water all animals daily according to established schedules and dietary requirements for each species.
Monitor animals throughout the day for signs of illness, injury, distress, or behavioral changes; report concerns to management immediately.
Administer basic first aid and routine care as directed; assist with veterinary visits as needed.
Maintain accurate feeding logs and daily care records.
Ensure all animals have appropriate shelter, bedding, and environmental conditions.

Facility Cleaning & Maintenance

Clean and sanitize animal enclosures, stalls, cages, pens, and all living spaces on a daily basis.
Remove waste, soiled bedding, and debris; replace bedding and nesting material as needed.
Maintain cleanliness of feed storage areas, tack rooms, and equipment.
Inspect fencing, enclosures, and gates daily; report and assist with repairs as needed.
Ensure water troughs, feeders, and water dispensers are clean and functioning properly.

Show Preparation & Animal Handling

Tack horses and other equine animals, including grooming, saddling, bridling, and equipment checks prior to each show or event.
Prepare all animals for performances according to show schedules, ensuring animals are groomed, calm, and ready for their cues.
Transport and move animals safely between living areas, performance areas, and the petting zoo.
Work with show directors and performers to ensure animals are properly positioned and handled during productions.
Return animals safely to enclosures following performances and ensure all animals are settled and cared for post-show.

Petting Zoo Operations

Prepare the petting zoo area for daily guest interactions, ensuring cleanliness and safety.
Monitor petting zoo animals throughout the day and manage guest interactions to ensure the safety of both guests and animals.
Remove animals from guest contact areas when needed for rest, feeding, or health reasons.
Provide brief educational information to guests about animals as appropriate.

Teamwork & Communication

Coordinate with show directors, farm management, and other departments to align animal schedules with show and event timelines.
Communicate proactively regarding animal availability, health concerns, or enclosure issues that may affect operations.
Assist with special events, private experiences, and other animal-related programming as directed.
Follow all safety protocols, animal welfare guidelines, and organizational policies at all times.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Prior experience working with livestock, horses, or farm animals in a professional or agricultural setting.
Demonstrated ability to safely handle and restrain animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
Experience tacking horses (saddling, bridling, grooming) required.
Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and pull as required by animal care duties.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the season.
Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain consistent daily care schedules.
Must be 18 years of age or older.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in a theatrical, entertainment, or tourism environment involving live animals.
Knowledge of multiple livestock species (equine, bovine, ovine, caprine, poultry, etc.).
Basic veterinary knowledge or certification in animal first aid.
Experience working with animals in a guest-facing or petting zoo setting.

This position requires the ability to work safely around horses and livestock of varying sizes and temperaments. Candidates with severe animal allergies, musculoskeletal limitations, or conditions that may be aggravated by prolonged outdoor work, heavy lifting, or animal exposure should consult a physician prior to employment.
