Structural Engineer Associate

Help Shape Safe, Resilient Schools Across Los Angeles

Project Support Services (PSS) is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer Associate to support the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Facilities Services Division.

This position performs moderately complex structural engineering work supporting the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of LAUSD facilities. The Structural Engineer Associate prepares, analyzes, and reviews structural plans, specifications, estimates, calculations, quality assurance plans, and technical reports for compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.

Working with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, inspectors, and District staff, the Structural Engineer Associate helps resolve structural issues, evaluate constructability, review completed work, and develop practical recommendations for school building projects.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented structural engineering professional with experience in building design, plan review, field investigation, cost estimating, and construction support. Experience with school building construction is especially valued.

What You’ll Do

Prepare, analyze, and review structural design plans, specifications, estimates, calculations, and reports for compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
Review structural services provided by engineering consultants and architects as part of contract administration and recommend appropriate revisions.
Prepare structural design plans and specifications, quality assurance plans, conceptual and detailed cost estimates, and construction-related reports.
Support the design and evaluation of concrete, structural steel, timber, masonry, metal, and other structural systems and materials.
Review project status, initiate changes when needed, and provide technical advice and assistance to structural designers and other engineering and design staff.
Review structural plans, specifications, design calculations, and mathematical calculations for completeness, accuracy, code compliance, and constructability.
Develop cost and expenditure requirements and evaluate alternate means and methods of construction.
Review completed structural work for conformance with recognized standards and assess its feasibility, completeness, and accuracy.
Assist with the design and layout of foundation, floor, wall, and roof framing plans for major building structures.
Provide structural recommendations to contractors, architects, engineers, and construction inspectors during construction.
Analyze environmental impact reports, negative declarations, and soils-test data and make appropriate recommendations for foundation design.
Prepare feasibility reports and preliminary designs for proposed structures and facilities under construction.
Conduct site investigations and prepare scoping reports, findings, and recommendations.
Perform other related structural engineering duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of three years of full-time, paid professional structural engineering experience.
Bachelor’s degree in structural engineering or civil engineering, with specialization in structural engineering coursework, from a recognized college or university.
Working knowledge of structural engineering principles, calculations, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and construction practices.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, a positive attitude, and strong attention to detail.
Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
Ability to present technical ideas and recommendations clearly to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Concrete, structural steel, timber, masonry, metal, and related structural systems
Foundation, floor, wall, and roof framing design
Construction-phase structural issue resolution
Site investigations and scoping reports
Feasibility studies and preliminary structural design
Cost estimating and evaluation of alternate construction methods
Professional Engineer certification recognized by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists
