Teen Center
Do you like working with youth? We have the job for you! The City of San Ramon is looking for fun and energetic staff to work at the Middle School Teen Centers. Teen Center staff help plan fun weekly activities for the middle schoolers and assist with homework. The hours of the Teen Center are Mondays - Fridays from 2 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. We provide a flexible schedule. Teen staff may also have the opportunity to work special City events, weekends, holidays, and shifts at other facilities. Come join our team!

What does a Teen Center staff do?

Supervise and engage with program participants
Facilitate and implement recreation activities
Maintain a safe program environment and facility
Administers first aid as required
Respond to questions by the public concerning program and department activities.
Understand and implement Parks & Community Services Department Policies and Procedures
Provide program feedback to the Recreation Technician, Coordinator or Supervisor
Open, close and secure program sites
Plan and organize program elements
Attend mandatory meetings and trainings
Have fun with the participants

Definition
Under general supervision, provides leadership and functional oversight to a recreation program, activity or service; directs and/or leads the activities of a program, activity or service; organizes and implements program elements and oversees participants, and performs related work as required.

Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direct or general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May exercise technical and functional direction and provide training to other staff.

Class Characteristics
These are the entry-level classes in the Recreation Leader Series within Parks and Community Services Department. Positions within this class typically have basic work-related experience. Positions at the I level usually perform duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Recreation Leader II is distinguished from the class of Recreation Leader I by responsibility for on-site coordination of a specific program area.

Positions in this series are flexibly staffed and are filled on a seasonal program-specific basis. Positions at the II level can be filled by advancement from the I level requiring 250 hours of additional experience and after gaining the knowledge, skill, and experience which meet the qualifications for and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

Recreation Leader I:

Attends mandatory meetings and trainings.
Responds to questions by the public concerning program and department activities.
Supervises and engages with program participants.
Facilitates and implements recreation activities according to a prepared curriculum.
Maintains a safe program environment and facility.
Administers first aid as required; handles emergency or out-of-the ordinary situations by notify the proper authority or responder.
Understands and implements departmental policies and procedures
Keeps records and prepares reports.
Provides program feedback to the supervisory or management staff.

Recreation Leader II, in addition to the above:

Open, close and secure program site.
Plan and organize program elements.
Supervise volunteers in program area.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Common sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages.
Youth supervision and leadership techniques.
Concepts of program risk management and safe work practices.

Ability to:

Supervise and lead youth of various ages.
Communicate effectively and possess excellent interpersonal skills while interacting with program participants, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
Handle and prioritize multiple tasks.
Provide reliable and dependable assistance to the assigned program areas.
Provide creativity and enthusiasm to the assigned program areas.
Work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.
At the II Level, work independently with minimal direction from the Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Recreation Leader I:

Must be a minimum of 16 years old. Experience working with children in a sport setting, day camp, child care program, youth program or summer camp is desired. Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting and documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years are required.

Recreation Leader II:

Must be a minimum of 17 years old in addition to the requirements above with at least 250 hours of experience working with children in a sport setting, day camp, child care program, youth program or summer camp, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licenses and Certifications:
At the option of the City, persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, certificates or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment. Additional requirements may include, but are not limited to:

California class C driver's license
First Aid Certification
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
