Fiber Technician (ISP/OSP)
Position Overview
CDL Utilities has an immediate opening for an experienced and dependable Fiber Technician to join our growing telecommunications team.
This is a hands-on field position for a well-rounded fiber technician who enjoys every aspect of fiber optic construction, not just one piece of the process. We are looking for someone who can confidently install, prep, splice, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain fiber optic networks in both ISP and OSP environments.
The ideal candidate is safety-focused, takes pride in producing high-quality work, and is comfortable managing the full scope of fiber projects from installation through final testing and restoration. This position primarily supports commercial and utility telecommunications projects throughout Long Island, with occasional travel as business needs require.
Most work is performed outdoors, and candidates must be comfortable working in varying weather conditions, extended hours, and occasional weekends during emergency restoration or special projects.
Responsibilities
- Install, prep, splice, terminate, and test fiber optic cabling in both ISP and OSP environments.
- Perform fusion splicing on single fiber and ribbon fiber cables.
- Read and interpret construction prints, splice diagrams, utility maps, and network documentation.
- Perform OTDR, power meter, fiber identification, and continuity testing to verify network performance.
- Install and build fiber closures, splice cases, terminals, splitters, and distribution equipment.
- Troubleshoot fiber outages and perform restoration work as needed.
- Assist with aerial and underground fiber construction activities when required.
- Operate and maintain fusion splicers, OTDRs, OFIs, ribbonizers, cleavers, power meters, and other fiber testing equipment.
- Complete daily production reports, redlines, job documentation, and project closeout information accurately.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe operating condition.
- Communicate effectively with crew leaders, project managers, customers, inspectors, and fellow team members.
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and industry best practices while maintaining a clean and organized job site.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a well-rounded Fiber Technician who enjoys working in the field and takes ownership of the entire fiber installation process. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between installation, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and restoration work as project needs change.
This is not a position for someone who only performs one aspect of fiber construction—we're looking for a technician who enjoys doing it all and wants to be part of a team that values quality workmanship, safety, and continuous improvement.

- Ability to read and interpret construction prints, splice diagrams, utility maps, and network documentation.
- Knowledge of aerial and underground fiber construction practices.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and customer satisfaction.
