The Executive Director of Teaching, Learning & Educational Technology provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for curriculum development, academic assessment, instructional quality, instructional design, faculty development, educational technology, and academic innovation across Salem University.
Serving as a key member of Academic Affairs leadership, the Executive Director is responsible for strengthening the systems, processes, technologies, and instructional practices that support high-quality teaching and learning. The position oversees curriculum governance and management, supports academic assessment and continuous improvement, provides leadership for instructional design and Learning Management System (LMS) operations, and advances the strategic use of emerging educational technologies.
Working collaboratively with the provost, academic deans and directors, faculty, Institutional Effectiveness, the Registrar, Information Technology, Student Success, and other University departments, the Executive Director ensures that curriculum, instructional practices, assessment processes, and educational technologies support student achievement, academic quality, accreditation expectations, workforce readiness, and institutional priorities.
The Executive Director serves as a university-wide resource and subject matter expert for curriculum management, teaching and learning, assessment, instructional innovation, and educational technology.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum Leadership

Provide leadership and coordination for university curriculum development, revision, approval, implementation, and documentation processes.

Coordinate curriculum proposals from initial development through institutional approval and implementation.

Chair the University Curriculum Committee and facilitate curriculum governance activities.

Develop committee agendas, coordinate supporting materials, maintain minutes, and ensure accurate documentation of curriculum decisions and approvals.

Establish and manage curriculum workflows, approval processes, and implementation timelines.

Maintain official curriculum records, program inventories, curriculum maps, course records, and institutional curriculum documentation.

Collaborate with the Registrar and Institutional Effectiveness to support the accuracy and integrity of the academic catalog.

Develop and maintain curriculum policies, procedures, forms, templates, timelines, and standard operating procedures.

Provide guidance and consultation to faculty, deans, program directors, and academic leadership regarding curriculum development and approval processes.

Support the development and approval of new academic programs, certificates, concentrations, courses, and other academic offerings.

Promote consistency, transparency, and efficiency in curriculum governance and academic program management.
Academic Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness

Support the University's annual academic program review process in collaboration with Institutional Effectiveness.

Collaborate with Institutional Effectiveness to implement academic assessment processes, timelines, reporting expectations, and continuous improvement activities.

Provide faculty and academic leadership with guidance related to Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), curriculum mapping, and assessment design.

Support faculty in developing meaningful assessment plans, measures, action plans, and continuous improvement strategies.

Coordinate curriculum-related documentation needed to support institutional assessment and accreditation.

Maintain assessment calendars, reporting timelines, and related academic documentation in partnership with Institutional Effectiveness.

Assist academic programs in using assessment findings to inform curriculum review, course revisions, instructional improvements, and student success strategies.

Promote the effective use of assessment data as a tool for continuous academic improvement.

Collaborate with Institutional Effectiveness to ensure academic assessment activities support institutional priorities, accreditation expectations, and strategic goals.
Accreditation & Academic Compliance

Support institutional and programmatic accreditation initiatives related to curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment, and educational technology.

Coordinate the preparation and organization of academic documentation and supporting evidence for accreditation activities.

Collaborate with academic leadership and Institutional Effectiveness to ensure curriculum and instructional practices align with Higher Learning Commission (HLC), state, federal, and specialized accreditation requirements.

Maintain curriculum documentation necessary for regulatory, accreditation, and institutional reporting.

Support substantive change processes, new program approvals, program modifications, and other academic regulatory activities.

Monitor changes in accreditation standards, federal regulations, state requirements, and higher education practices that may affect curriculum, instruction, assessment, or educational technology.

Communicate relevant changes and assist academic leadership in developing appropriate implementation strategies.

Promote consistent documentation and processes that support academic compliance and institutional readiness.
Faculty Development & Academic Support

Develop and lead a comprehensive approach to faculty development that strengthens instructional quality, student engagement, academic assessment, and effective use of educational technology.

Design and deliver professional development related to curriculum design, assessment, instructional practices, educational technology, academic quality, and emerging trends in teaching and learning.

Train faculty, deans, program directors, and subject matter experts on curriculum processes, assessment expectations, instructional technologies, and academic standards.

Develop faculty resources, curriculum guides, instructional materials, templates, manuals, and standard operating procedures.

Promote evidence-based teaching practices across online, hybrid, blended, and face-to-face learning environments.

Support faculty adoption of strategies that promote regular and substantive interaction, student engagement, accessibility, and learning effectiveness.

Identify faculty development needs through assessment data, course review findings, faculty feedback, student outcomes, and institutional priorities.

Instructional Design & Course Development

Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the University's instructional design function.

Establish and maintain standardized course design, development, review, and quality assurance processes.

Develop standards for course organization, instructional quality, accessibility, student engagement, and effective use of educational technologies.

Establish instructional design priorities and monitor course development projects, timelines, deliverables, and resource needs.

Facilitate collaboration among instructional designers, subject matter experts, faculty, program directors, and academic leadership.

Ensure master courses are developed, reviewed, maintained, and updated according to established University standards and timelines.

Establish periodic course review processes to ensure curriculum remains current, accurate, engaging, accessible, and aligned with approved learning outcomes.

Implement continuous quality improvement practices for course design and development.

Promote consistency in the student learning experience across courses, programs, and instructional modalities.

Ensure instructional materials and digital learning environments support accessibility and universal design principles.
Learning Management System & Educational Technology
-
Provide strategic leadership for LMS administration, digital learning tools, courseware, and instructional technologies.

Provide strategic oversight of the University's Learning Management System, including Blackboard and related academic technologies.

Partner with Learning Technologies/LMS personnel to ensure reliable LMS operations, effective course deployment, faculty support, and continuous system improvement.

Establish priorities for educational technology implementation, adoption, training, and evaluation.

Evaluate emerging instructional technologies and recommend solutions that improve teaching, student engagement, accessibility, and academic outcomes.

Coordinate with Information Technology regarding system integrations, security, data governance, infrastructure, and technical requirements.

Support the integration and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), simulation technologies, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), adaptive learning, and other emerging technologies within curriculum and instruction.

Develop strategies to support faculty adoption and effective use of instructional technology.

Evaluate the effectiveness, scalability, usability, and academic value of educational technology investments.

Ensure instructional technology initiatives align with institutional policies, academic priorities, accessibility expectations, and applicable compliance requirements.
Academic Innovation

Identify emerging trends in higher education, instructional design, artificial intelligence, digital learning, workforce education, competency-based learning, and educational technology.

Evaluate opportunities to incorporate innovative approaches into academic programs and instructional delivery.

Partner with academic leadership to pilot, assess, and scale effective teaching and learning innovations.

Support the development of flexible and innovative learning models that respond to student needs and evolving workforce expectations.

Encourage experimentation and responsible innovation while maintaining academic quality, accessibility, security, and regulatory compliance.

Develop frameworks for evaluating effectiveness and return on institutional investments in academic technology and instructional innovation.
Data, Reporting & Performance Management

Develop metrics, dashboards, and reporting processes related to curriculum activity, course development, faculty development, academic assessment, instructional quality, and educational technology.

Monitor project timelines, curriculum activity, faculty participation, course development progress, and educational technology adoption.

Provide regular reports and recommendations to the provost and academic leadership.

Analyze academic and operational data to identify trends, risks, opportunities, and areas requiring intervention.

Use data and assessment findings to support resource prioritization and continuous improvement.

Collaborate with Institutional Effectiveness to ensure appropriate alignment of academic data, assessment, and institutional reporting.
Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

Lead cross-functional projects involving curriculum, academic technology, assessment, course development, and instructional improvement.

Develop implementation plans, project timelines, workflows, communication strategies, and accountability structures for major academic initiatives.

Prepare executive reports, recommendations, presentations, and strategic proposals for university leadership.

Serve on University committees, task forces, and institutional initiatives as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned by the provost.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned master's degree in Higher Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Assessment, Educational Leadership, or a related field. Doctorate preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education.
- Demonstrated experience leading curriculum development, academic assessment, instructional design, or educational technology initiatives.
- Experience supporting institutional and/or programmatic accreditation.
- Knowledge of Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accreditation standards and higher education regulatory requirements.
- Experience leading faculty development initiatives.
- Experience with learning management systems (Blackboard preferred) and instructional technologies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of assessment planning, learning outcomes assessment, and continuous quality improvement.
- Experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and project management skills.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze institutional data and translate findings into actionable recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

Earned doctorate in Higher Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field.

Experience serving as a Curriculum Committee Chair or similar academic governance role.

Experience with instructional design methodologies such as Quality Matters or similar quality frameworks.

Experience implementing AI, simulation, VR/AR, adaptive learning technologies, or other innovative educational technologies.

Work Environment
This position operates in a dynamic academic environment requiring strategic leadership, cross-functional collaboration, project management, innovation, and regular engagement with faculty and academic leadership.
The primary work location is Salem, West Virginia, with hybrid or remote arrangements considered based on institutional needs. Regardless of work arrangement, the Executive Director must maintain regular availability and effective collaboration with University leadership, faculty, and staff.
The position may require periodic on-campus presence and occasional travel for faculty development, academic planning, accreditation activities, technology implementation, institutional meetings, commencement, conferences, and other University initiatives.
Occasional evening or weekend availability may be required based on institutional priorities, project implementations, or academic events.
