Full Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Controller to lead and execute all aspects of the accounting function. This role combines Controller-level ownership with Accounting Manager-level execution and is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and driving a timely and efficient close process.

This individual will play a critical role in stabilizing and scaling the accounting function, with a strong focus on job costing, WIP, revenue recognition, and billing accuracy in a fast-paced construction environment.

Work Schedule

This position is required to be in-office five (5) days per week during the initial onboarding and training period to ensure full integration with team processes, systems, and operational workflows.

Upon successful completion of training and demonstrated proficiency in the role, the position will transition to a hybrid schedule of four (4) days in-office and one (1) remote day per week.

Continued flexibility is contingent upon sustained performance, team collaboration, and business needs. The company reserves the right to adjust in-office expectations as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close
- Own and execute the full month-end close process, with a target of 7–10 business days
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all financial reporting
- Maintain supporting schedules and reconciliations

WIP, Revenue Recognition & Job Costing
- Own WIP calculations and ensure alignment between production, billing, and costs
- Document revenue recognition policies for various regions/scopes/customers
- Partner with operations to validate job performance and financial accuracy
- Prevent and resolve discrepancies between field activity and financial reporting

Billing & AR Oversight
- Oversee customer invoicing processes to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Implement controls to prevent billing errors and rejected invoices
- Drive discipline in billing cycles and submission timelines
- Support collections efforts and maintain visibility into AR aging

AP, Payroll & Daily Accounting Operations
- Oversee AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger activities
- Review and approve journal entries, coding, and transactions
- Ensure proper expense classification and cost tracking

Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain integrity of accounting systems (QuickBooks Online and related systems)
- Ensure alignment between operational systems and financial reporting
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy
- Support reporting infrastructure (e.g., Power BI, data integrations)

Cash Flow & Financial Planning Support
- Monitor and manage cash flow, including forecasting and payment prioritization
- Support leadership with financial insights and analysis
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes

Internal Controls & Compliance
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls
- Ensure GAAP compliance and audit readiness
- Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and banking partners as needed

Team Leadership (as applicable)
- Manage and develop accounting staff
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability
- Provide training, mentorship, and performance management

Qualifications

- 8+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role
- Strong experience in construction accounting, including WIP and job costing
- Proven ability to manage and execute a full month-end close
- Experience with QuickBooks (Online preferred) and/or construction ERP systems
- Strong understanding of revenue recognition and financial reporting
- Experience improving processes and implementing controls in a growing company
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to operate in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Experience

- Experience in telecom, construction, or field service industries
- Familiarity with unit-based billing models
- Experience working with reporting tools such as Power BI
- Background in system implementations or process transformations
