Full Job Description

Job Overview

HuronWest Mechanical is a commercial HVAC and refrigeration service company serving Southeast Michigan. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled HVAC/Refrigeration Service Technician to join a growing team. In this role, you will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems to keep our customers’ restaurants, retail spaces, schools, and light-industrial facilities running without interruption. This is a position for an experienced technician who can run service calls (primarily refrigeration) independently, owns their work, and wants to grow with a company on the way up — backed by a workmanship guarantee, a clear path for advancement, and pay that rewards skill, and licensure.

Duties

Install, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems, including rooftop units, walk-in coolers and freezers, split systems, air conditioning units, and ventilation equipment.
Diagnose electrical, mechanical, refrigerant, and controls issues to root cause — not parts-swapping.
Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to accurately diagnose issues and plan repairs.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on contracted accounts to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life, and identify and quote needed repairs before they become emergencies.
Respond to emergency service calls, including a shared on-call rotation, with the judgment to make sound decisions in the field unsupervised.
Use specialized tools — multimeters, gauges, recovery equipment, and brazing tools — to service and repair refrigeration and HVAC components.
Maintain detailed service records and complete work orders documenting findings, parts, labor, and recommendations, with photos and customer sign-off on site through our mobile work-order system.
Operate a company service vehicle safely while transporting equipment and parts between job sites; maintain truck inventory and tooling.
Represent HuronWest Mechanical professionally on every site — you are the company in the customer’s eyes.
Mentor apprentices and junior technicians as you grow, and collaborate with the team to improve service quality and efficiency.
Ensure compliance with EPA refrigerant-handling requirements, safety standards, and local building codes on all work.

Skills & Qualifications

Proven commercial HVAC AND refrigeration service experience — you can run a service call alone and diagnose complex issues on site. Up to roughly five years in the trade is ideal, but how you work matters more than the number.
EPA Section 608 certification (Universal preferred).
Valid Michigan driver’s license with a clean enough record to operate a company vehicle.
Strong electrical and refrigeration-cycle troubleshooting fundamentals, with the ability to read schematics accurately.
Commercial refrigeration depth — supermarket, restaurant, walk-in, and ice-machine service — is highly desirable.
Michigan LARA mechanical license classifications (Refrigeration, HVAC Equipment, Hydronic, Unlimited Refrigeration & A/C, Fuel Gas) are a strong plus — each classification earns an automatic pay increase, and we pay for the exams.
Brazing and refrigerant line-work skills for repairing and modifying refrigeration and HVAC components.
Familiarity with controls, building automation, or rooftop-unit systems is a plus.
Field-service experience troubleshooting complex mechanical issues independently, with proficiency using testing tools for electrical diagnostics.
NATE certification, or the willingness to earn it (we pay for it).
Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail, reliability, and ownership of your work.
Employment is contingent on a background check.

Compensation & Benefits

Base pay: $32.50-40.00 an hour, depending on experience
License raises: a pay bump for every Michigan LARA classification you earn — exams and prep paid by us.
Year-end bonus: discretionary annual year-end bonus
Health benefits: ICHRA
Paid time off plus paid holidays.
Retirement plan: SIMPLE IRA
Company vehicle, fuel, and major tooling provided; phone and tablet for the field.
Paid training: EPA, NATE, LARA classifications, and manufacturer training.
On-call: shared emergency rotation, compensated separately at a premium rate.
