Job type: Full-time, hourly, nonexempt
Work location: On-site
Shift: 1st Shift - 6:00 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. with occasional Saturdays (half day)
Overtime: Available and required when production needs dictate
Pay: Based on experience
Reports to: Production Lead

Position summary

Phoenix Steel Fabricating is seeking a qualified CNC Press Brake Operator to set up and operate press-brake equipment safely and produce formed metal parts that meet the work order, drawing, and production schedule.

This position requires more than loading and unloading parts. The operator must be able to select and install tooling, verify the first piece, monitor bend quality, complete in-process inspections, and recognize when material or parts are moving out of tolerance.

Our press-brake work centers include the AMADA HRB2204 and JMT/Durma press brakes. Employees are trained and signed off on each work center separately before operating it independently.

Required qualifications

Demonstrated ability to set up and operate a CNC press brake.
Ability to select the correct tooling and properly seat and lock it before operation.
Ability to read and follow work orders, fabrication drawings, setup sheets, and written instructions.
Ability to perform shop math in both standard and metric units.
Ability to measure bend angles, flange dimensions, and part squareness.
Ability to complete first-piece and in-process inspections.
Ability to recognize springback, excessive marking, cracking, and out-of-tolerance conditions.
Ability to communicate clearly with coworkers and the Production Lead.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to work the regular first-shift schedule and required overtime, including scheduled Saturdays.
Willingness and ability to complete forklift training and certification.
Commitment to following machine guarding, personal protective equipment, and all other safety requirements.

Preferred qualifications

Previous experience independently setting up CNC press-brake equipment.
Experience selecting punches, dies, and other tooling based on the material and job requirements.
Experience forming steel or aluminum parts from fabrication drawings.
Experience using angle gauges, squares, calipers, and other dimensional inspection tools.
Previous metal-fabrication or sheet-metal manufacturing experience.
Current forklift certification or prior forklift operating experience.

Essential responsibilities

Set up and operate the press brake using the assigned work order, drawing, and setup sheet.
Confirm the part number, quantity, material type, material thickness, and drawing revision before starting the job.
Select and install the correct tooling for each job.
Make sure tooling is properly seated, aligned, and locked before operating the machine.
Produce and inspect a first piece before beginning the full production run.
Check the first piece for bend angle, flange size, squareness, and conformance to the drawing.
Perform and document required in-process inspections.
Monitor parts for springback, marking, cracking, distortion, or dimensional variation.
Stop production when parts begin moving out of tolerance.
Keep hands and other body parts clear of the ram and all pinch points.
Keep guards, interlocks, and light curtains in use during operation.
Complete daily equipment inspections and required operator maintenance.
Keep the machine, work area, material, and surrounding aisles clean and orderly.
Notify the Production Lead promptly when there is a problem with the material, tooling, setup, drawing, or machine.
Properly identify and tag material and completed parts.
Place a nonconformance tag on suspected defective parts and notify the Production Lead.
Record good-part quantities, scrap, rework, and downtime accurately.
Stop work and report unsafe conditions, injuries, close calls, equipment problems, or quality concerns immediately.
Cross-train on other work centers when requested.

Quality expectations

The Press Brake Operator is responsible for verifying the quality of the work being produced—not simply running the machine.

The operator must:

Verify job and material information before production.
Inspect the first piece before continuing the run.
Perform required in-process checks.
Record inspection results accurately.
Stop when a part is outside tolerance or there is uncertainty about the setup.
Place suspect material or parts on hold rather than allowing them to move to the next operation.
Ask for a second inspection or supervisor review when needed.

Equipment training and authorization

Operating experience does not automatically authorize an employee to run every machine in the plant.

Employees are trained and signed off on each press-brake work center separately.
Employees may operate only the equipment for which their current training and signoff are on file.
Forklift certification is not required on the first day of employment.
Employees must complete the required forklift training and certification before operating a forklift.
Guards, interlocks, light curtains, lockout/tagout procedures, quality holds, and required inspections may never be bypassed.
Employees may not change material, drawings, programs, or approved setups without authorization.
Employees may stop work whenever there is a safety, quality, or equipment concern.

Physical requirements

Stand, walk, bend, twist, reach, grip, and handle material for most of the shift.
Frequently push, pull, squat, and reach while handling parts and tooling.
Regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds using proper lifting techniques, assistance from another employee, or available lifting equipment.
Possess the close-up vision and color vision necessary to inspect parts and identify conditions affecting quality.
Work around moving machinery, sharp edges, hot surfaces, dust, fumes, forklift and truck traffic, overhead loads, and moderate-to-loud manufacturing noise.

Required personal protective equipment

Steel-toed footwear is required on the shop floor.
Safety glasses are required in all areas where parts are manufactured.
Additional personal protective equipment must be worn when required by the task or work area.
