Job description:

The MLL/Phonics Teacher (Grades 6–8) provides targeted literacy and language support to middle school students who are developing English proficiency and/or require intervention in foundational reading skills. The teacher delivers small-group and individualized instruction focused on phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and academic language development. Responsibilities include administering and supporting student assessments, analyzing data to identify learning needs, monitoring student progress, maintaining compliance with MLL requirements, and collaborating with teachers and families to support student achievement. The MLL/Phonics Teacher works closely with school staff to ensure students receive appropriate interventions that promote growth in reading and language proficiency.

Salary Range: Starting at $65,000(commensurate with experience and certification)

About the Role

The MLL/Phonics Interventionist will provide targeted literacy support to Multilingual Learners (MLLs) and students requiring foundational reading skills intervention in grades 6–8. This role will primarily push into Guided Reading blocks Monday through Friday, partnering with teachers to accelerate student growth in phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and language acquisition.

This role includes collaboration with the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction and Special Education team to ensure lessons are inclusive and differentiated to meet the needs of all learners.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Intervention

Provide daily push-in support during Guided Reading blocks for scholars in grades 6–8.
Deliver small-group and individualized phonics and literacy interventions aligned to student needs.
Support Multilingual Learners in developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Implement evidence-based instructional strategies to improve decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including MLLs and students performing below grade level.
Collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure interventions align with core instruction and grade-level standards.
Support English language acquisition through targeted language development instruction and culturally responsive teaching practices.
Provide intervention services through MTSS/RTI frameworks and participate in problem-solving meetings to support scholar growth.

Planning & Preparation

Develop and maintain weekly lesson plans for intervention groups.
Create engaging and standards-aligned instructional materials and activities.
Analyze student data to inform lesson planning and instructional decisions.
Adapt lessons based on student progress and emerging needs.
Maintain required documentation related to MLL services, intervention plans, and scholar progress.
Utilize assessment and language proficiency data to develop targeted instructional goals for scholars.

Progress Monitoring & Data Analysis

Administer literacy and language assessments to identify student needs and measure growth.
Track student performance through regular progress monitoring.
Maintain accurate records of intervention attendance, assessment data, and growth metrics.
Analyze data and adjust intervention plans to ensure scholars are making measurable progress.
Prepare progress reports and share student growth updates with teachers, school leaders, and families as needed.
Monitor MLL proficiency data and support compliance with state and federal reporting requirements.

Testing & Compliance

Assist in the administration and coordination of NYSESLAT, New York State Exams, NWEA MAP, i-Ready, and other school-based assessments.
Ensure testing accommodations are implemented accurately for eligible scholars, including MLLs and students with IEPs or 504 Plans.
Support test preparation logistics, scheduling, proctoring, and assessment documentation.
Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and school requirements related to Multilingual Learner services.
Collaborate with school leaders to ensure accurate MLL identification, service provision, progress monitoring, and parent communication requirements are met.

Collaboration & Communication

Partner with ELA teachers, Grade Team Leads, Special Education staff, and school leadership to support student achievement.
Participate in data meetings, professional development sessions, and collaborative planning meetings.
Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and intervention goals when appropriate.
Support school-wide literacy initiatives and contribute to a culture of academic excellence.
Collaborate with teachers and support staff to develop and implement strategies that improve literacy outcomes for scholars.

Additional Responsibilities

Assist with literacy screening and placement decisions for intervention groups.
Support preparation for state assessments and school-wide literacy goals.
Assist with the identification, scheduling, and service delivery of scholars receiving MLL support.
Perform other duties as assigned by school leadership that support student achievement and school priorities.

Success Metrics

Demonstrated growth in student reading proficiency, phonics skills, and language acquisition.
Consistent progress monitoring and accurate data tracking.
Strong collaboration with instructional teams.
Compliance with MLL service requirements and assessment protocols.
Increased percentage of scholars meeting literacy growth goals, intervention benchmarks, and language proficiency targets.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (required); Master’s degree in Education (preferred)
New York State certification in ENL or Childhood Education with extension (preferred)
Experience teaching MLL at the middle school level, especially in under-resourced settings (preferred)
Strong belief in the power of rigorous reading and writing instruction for all students
Familiarity with or interest in the Reading Reconsidered curriculum and high-leverage instructional practices
Commitment to ongoing growth, feedback, and collaboration
