MARTIAL ARTS ACTIVITY SPECIALIST

OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSES

New York City Mission Society helps children, youth, and families in New York City’s poorest neighborhoods transcend the ills of poverty and create a cycle of success for generations to come. We have a dynamic portfolio of education, workforce development, prevention, and youth development and community-building programs.

During the Martial Arts activity, participants will practice discipline, focus, and physical techniques to develop skill and confidence. The activity will emphasize foundational martial arts forms, safety, and respect.

Title: Martial Arts Activity Specialist, COMPASS Program

Basic Function: Facilitate engaging activities that develop participants’ skills and confidence while fostering a nurturing environment for personal and educational growth.

Salary: $30.00 per hour

Location: PS091-2200 Aqueduct Ave E, Bx, NY 10453

Hours: Part-time: 10 hours per week

Program Description:

New York City Mission Society’s Afterschool and Summer Day Camp Program is dedicated to cultivating the personal growth and educational advancement of all elementary school participants. With a curriculum focused on academic support, STEAM, literacy, social-emotional development, physical activity and healthy living, introduction to college and careers, and life skills development, the afterschool program reinforces school-day learning in a safe and healthy environment. Programming is provided after school, on school holidays, and during the summer.

Principal Responsibilities:

● Understand the essential objectives of the Mission Society program and effectively communicate those objectives to all immediate stakeholders (families & youth).

● Plan and implement engaging martial arts activities appropriate to participants’ age and skill level.

● Prepare curriculum, materials, and hand-outs; arrive early to all assignments; attend all training sessions designated by funders and the Program Director.

● Use a variety of methods and approaches (including differentiation) to match curricular objectives and the range of participants’ needs.

● Work collaboratively with Group Leaders to oversee activities and ensure participant safety.

● Utilize positive management of behavior in an environment of mutual respect that promotes self-esteem and inclusion.

● Develop and complete lesson plans; ensure weekly plans adequately meet program goals.

● Collaborate with program staff and school staff to plan and implement learning celebrations and community events, showcasing participant learning

● Report performance concerns to the Program Director, Assistant Director, and/or Program Aide.

Qualifications:

● Minimum high school diploma or equivalent, or substantial experience working with children (elementary school aged). If a high school diploma or equivalent has been obtained, experience with children is still preferred though not required.

● Associate degree or college credits preferred.

● Experience or formal training in martial arts required or strongly preferred.

● Must have strong interest in working with children and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of program and school staff.

● Must have excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills.

● Experience overseeing a group of young people is preferred.

General Requirements:

All staff are expected to be committed to the mission, vision, and values of Mission Society.

Pay: $30.00 per hour
