Full Job Description

Overview

The American Folk Art Museum, the nation’s museum of folk and self-taught art, is seeking a strategic and experienced Director of Finance to lead its fiscal operations.

As a vital member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Finance will oversee the Museum’s financial health, ensure robust fiscal governance, and align our resources with our mission to broaden the public’s appreciation of folk art through our collections, exhibitions, and educational programming.

This position provides strategic financial guidance and planning, treasury, analysis, and financial reporting activities for the finance areas of the Museum. The Director of Finance oversees an annual budget of $5M and provides management support to the Director & CEO, the Chief Operating Officer, and the Board of Trustees.

Key Responsibilities

- Oversee all aspects of financial operations, including annual operating budget development, forecasting, cash management, endowment reporting, and grant compliance.

- Prepare and present comprehensive monthly and annual financial statements, forecasts, budget-to-actual analyses, and year-end projections to the Board of Trustees and leadership.

- Lead annual audit preparation and coordination with external auditors; ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP), and oversee completion of IRS Form 990 filing.

- Ensure accurate month-end and year-end close processes, including general ledger entries, bank and investment reconciliations, and financial reporting.

- Supervise Accountant and review transactional level work (ensure invoices approved, proper entry, ensure Raiser’s Edge is reconciled with Sage Intacct each month).

- Manage the financial oversight of human resources administration, including serving as the primary liaison for the Museum’s PEO partner.

- Monitor compliance, benefits cost-allocations, and payroll accuracy.

- Develop, implement, and continuously review systems, policies, and procedures that safeguard and protect the Museum’s property, records, financial assets, historical and intangible assets.

- Collaborate with the Advancement team to create annual and long-term fundraising goals that support the operating and program expenditure budgets.

- Administer the organizations 403(b) retirement plan, overseeing data entry, contribution tracking, and timely fund remittances.

- Process and reconcile monthly credit card statements, ensuring timely expense allocation and compliance with internal controls.

- Oversee the Museum’s contracts, legal, and insurance matters.

- Other duties as assigned by the Chief Operating Officer.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, business administration.

- 10-15 years of experience in a nonprofit management position ideally in a museum, cultural and/or arts organization.

- MBA or CPA Certification highly preferred.

- Experience in managing a budget of $5+ million

- Extensive experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.

- Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of non-profit accounting.

- Extensive use and knowledge of Sage Intacct and Microsoft Excel. Experience with Raiser’s Edge is a plus.

- Experience working with investment advisors and knowledge of invested assets.

- Experience managing the relationship with a Professional Employer Organization is highly desirable.

- Excellent communication and relationship building skills.

- Detail oriented and the ability to meet multiple deadlines.

Compensation and Benefits

The Museum anticipates a starting compensation of $125,000.00 - $135,000.00 depending on qualifications and experience. The American Folk Art Museum also offers generous benefits for all regular full-time employees.
