Full Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Nurse Manager, the Lactation Consultant provides direct patient care and comprehensive lactation support to the mother-baby dyad in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The Lactation Consultant collaborates closely with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to assess lactation needs, develop and implement individualized plans of care, and evaluate outcomes.

This position also supports prenatal and patient education, staff training, Human Donor Milk processes, quality improvement initiatives, and data collection related to the hospital’s Baby-Friendly designation.

Key Responsibilities

Assess the lactation needs of mother-baby dyads and develop individualized plans of care.
Provide direct lactation support, education, and counseling to patients and families.
Plan, implement, and evaluate lactation orientation and in-service education for nursing and physician staff.
Facilitate prenatal and patient education classes and provide information regarding outpatient lactation resources.
Serve as a clinical resource to hospital staff, physicians, patients, and families regarding breastfeeding and lactation issues.
Ensure Human Donor Milk processes comply with regulatory requirements and established hospital policies.
Participate in data collection and educational activities supporting the hospital’s Baby-Friendly initiative and designation.
Collaborate and communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Provide direct patient care as a Staff Registered Nurse when needed.
Apply sound clinical judgment and decision-making when responding to changing patient or unit needs.
Follow infection control, patient safety, and patient rights standards.
Participate in performance and quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain required competencies and complete continuing education/CERP requirements necessary to maintain IBCLC certification.
Attend required staff meetings, mandatory in-services, and training.
Maintain accurate and appropriate clinical documentation.
Follow hospital policies regarding conduct, attendance, customer service, dress code, and professional standards.
Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) – Required

Licensure & Certifications

Active New York State Registered Nurse (RN) License – Required upon hire
IBCLC – International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification through IBCLE – Required upon hire
BLS – Basic Life Support, American Heart Association – Required upon hire
ACLS – Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, American Heart Association – Required within 6 months of employment
NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation Program – Required within 6 months of employment

Pay: $58.40 - $75.80 per hour
