Full Job Description

Position Title: Art/Music Teacher (Grades 5-8)

Summary:To provide an approved education program and establish a class environment that fosters learning and personal growth; to help students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for continued education; and to maintain good relationships with parents and other staff members.

Compensation:Base Salary-Certified-$73,500, (Adv. Degrees $3,000 for masters, $5,000 for doctorate). $200/ year for applicable experience.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. (Masters preferred)
Valid New York Instructional Certificate and Subject Area Endorsement or eligibility, Art or Music.
Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
Demonstrate working knowledge of the use of various technological software and equipment for tasks such as, but not limited to, word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual presentations, and telecommunications.
Understand the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school-related matters.
Knowledge of child growth and development, individual differences in ability, personality and interests and learning/motivational techniques.
Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
Knowledge of grade specific school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught.
Knowledge of Smartboard functions and tools.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work; parents, students and faculty etc.

Essential Performance Responsibilities (The following description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.)

The Music Teacher will pPromote active learning and skill development by delivering music instruction aligned with state curriculum standards and charter school educational goals using board-approved curricula and materials. Develops lesson plans and instructional strategies that provide individualized and small-group learning opportunities, sets clear instructional objectives, and assesses student academic progress and personal growth. Maintains accurate records of student achievement, collaborates with staff to address learning needs, and establishes a positive classroom environment that supports effective behavior and learning. Communicates regularly with parents regarding the music program and student progress, supervises students during assigned activities, and ensures the music classroom is organized and maintained. Engages in ongoing professional development, participates in school planning and faculty committees, utilizes community resources to enrich instruction, and upholds school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.

The Art teacher will develop and implement an art curriculum aligned with district goals while creating engaging lessons that maximize instructional time and foster creativity and artistic skill. Teaches a range of visual arts—including drawing, painting, design, crafts, art history, and three-dimensional art—while helping students develop aesthetic understanding, artistic techniques, and the ability to evaluate and appreciate art. Assesses student progress and adapts instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including those of students with special needs, through individual and small-group instruction and demonstrations. Maintains a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and studio work, teaches proper care and use of art tools and materials, and evaluates student growth through progress reports. Organizes art displays and exhibitions to showcase student work, maintains accurate records of grades, attendance, and achievement, promotes positive classroom behavior and responsible citizenship, communicates effectively with students and parents, collaborates with colleagues and participates in school committees, engages in professional development, and manages art materials and inventory.

Additional duties specific to music instruction:

Instruct students in music appreciation and the fundamentals of performing music for an audience.

Prepare participatory lesson plans and establish course goals including music appreciation and performance of songs, both vocal and instrumental;
Select and demonstrate instruments and other materials for courses to students.
Observe and evaluate students' work to determine student progress or to make suggestions for improvement;
Accompany students on field trips to musical presentations.
Instruct students to take “virtual trips” to concert halls or musical presentations, via internet;
Specialize in teaching one or more types of music, such as group choral.
Direct planning and supervision of student contests and arranging of art exhibits.
Work closely with the phys ed instructor for rehearsals and performances of song and dance arrangements for presentation on stage.
Determine the individual musical strengths of individual students and assign roles in concerts and stage musical performances that develop and showcase these talents.
Assist with videotaping of performances. Serve as master-of-ceremonies at musical presentations to school audiences.
Make recommendations for improvements to musical presentations, song and stage productions, as well as possible concerts.

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the School Director and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Experience: Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

Supervise: Students, and when assigned, student teachers and classroom aides
