Location: New York City
Position Type: Full-Time & In-Person
Company Overview:
2MO is a leading design-build firm in New York City, specializing in high-end commercial and residential projects. Our commitment to excellence has earned us a reputation for quality on design and construction.
Job Description:
This Senior Designer role at 2MO Studio serves as the critical link between creative vision and built execution, leading all phases of design from concept through final installation. Central to this role is an exceptional strength in developing highly detailed shop drawings and custom fabrication packages, with deep expertise across millwork, staircases, glass, metalwork, and other bespoke elements. The Senior Designer is responsible for translating design intent into precise, buildable documentation that upholds both aesthetic integrity and technical feasibility.
Acting as both lead interior designer and client-side project manager, this position oversees a wide range of project scopes, including interior furnishings as well as architectural additions, renovations, and remodels. The role is highly client-facing, managing all project-related communications, design meetings, and coordination with consultants and industry partners.
A defining aspect of this role is hands-on collaboration with custom fabricators from initial concept through final installation. The Senior Designer leads the full lifecycle of custom fabrication: initiating early design dialogues with fabricators, producing and reviewing shop drawings, coordinating material selections and mock-ups, resolving technical challenges, and ensuring alignment between design intent, engineering requirements, and fabrication constraints. This role requires proactive, clear, and highly effective communication with fabricators, maintaining close working relationships to ensure precision, quality, and accountability at every stage.
Reporting directly to the Design Lead and Construction Project Director, and working in close collaboration with the Construction Field Project Manager, the Senior Designer manages project timelines, budgets, and deliverables. Success in this role requires a strong balance of creative leadership, technical detailing expertise, and rigorous project management, ensuring all projects are executed to the highest standards of design excellence, constructability, and client satisfaction.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1/ Custom Fabrication Knowledge:
- Lead the development of highly detailed, technically rigorous shop drawings for all custom fabrications, including but not limited to millwork, staircases, glass, and metalwork—ensuring full alignment with design intent, site conditions, and constructability requirements.
- Translate conceptual and schematic designs into precise, buildable drawing packages with clear dimensions, material specifications, joinery details, and installation methodologies suitable for direct fabrication.
- Own and manage the full custom fabrication lifecycle from A-to-Z: early design coordination, shop drawing production, iterative reviews, prototyping/mock-ups, fabrication oversight, and final installation verification.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for custom fabricators, establishing strong working relationships and maintaining clear, proactive, and solutions-oriented communication throughout the entire process.
- Collaborate closely with millworkers, metal fabricators, glass vendors, and specialty trades to refine design details, resolve technical challenges, and ensure feasibility without compromising design integrity.
- Review, redline, and approve fabricator shop drawings and submittals, ensuring accuracy, consistency with design documentation, and compliance with project standards and field conditions.
- Coordinate material selections, finishes, hardware integration, and detailing directly with fabricators, ensuring all components are fully vetted, sourced, and executable.
- Anticipate and resolve conflicts between design intent and fabrication or installation constraints, providing clear direction and technical solutions in a timely manner.
- Conduct site visits and installation reviews to verify that all custom fabricated elements are executed in accordance with approved shop drawings and quality standards.
- Integrate custom fabrication timelines into overall project schedules, working in close coordination with the project management and construction teams to ensure seamless execution and delivery.
2/ Design Leadership:
- Research and analyze client goals and requirements; develop drawings, schedules, budgets, and diagrams that outline specific needs.
- Procure and document site measurements and existing conditions.
- Formulate preliminary space plans, design concepts, and study sketches that integrate client needs and reflect studio standards.
- Develop interior architectural details, including millwork details, cabinetry, lighting layouts, built-ins, and integrated design features.
- Produce detailed CAD drawings, plans, elevations, sections, and construction details, to communicate design intent clearly.
- Research and specify materials, finishes, fixtures, and products that meet project requirements and aesthetics.
- Order furnishings, fixtures, equipment, millwork details, and material palettes, including layout drawings and detailed product descriptions.
- Prepare specifications and schedules with accurate product information for furnishings, plumbing, appliances, lighting, and finishes.
- Prepare and present detailed client presentations, ensuring clarity, inspiration, and alignment with the project vision.
- Oversee the implementation of the design vision from concept through installation, ensuring cohesion, accuracy, and high-quality outcomes.
3/ Project Management:
- Manage project client-side budgets, fee analysis, proposals, and issuing invoices during the project lifecycle from design to completion.
- Coordinate and collaborate with outside consultants and contractors involved in project execution.
- Be ready to conduct site visits to monitor construction progress if needed, to confirm adherence to design specifications, and address any design-related issues.
- Review RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and contractor inquiries to maintain consistency with design intent.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including specifications, meeting notes, contracts, and change orders.
- Represent the studio confidently with clients, project teams, and vendors; relay relevant information to the internal team.
- Ensure the leadership is briefed on all design materials prior to client meetings; lead project-update meetings with clients as assigned.
- Maintain recurring design review sessions with the leadership and project team to ensure momentum and alignment.
- Delegate tasks to future design team members and review all work prior to issuing specifications or client-facing design deliverables.
