Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Book Conservation Treatment Technician / Art Restorer / Art Handler is responsible for the conservation, restoration, handling, evaluation, and documentation of books, works on paper, artwork, and other delicate objects. This role requires careful assessment, research, collaboration, and sound judgment to determine appropriate treatment options. Work may range from straightforward treatments to more complex restoration related projects.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervisory support within the book discipline includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Oversee workflow in and out of the book department.
Participate in directing inquiries, questions, and concerns within the discipline.
Participate in research and discovery of alternative treatment methods with other supervisors, including roundtable discussions related to problem-solving and troubleshooting treatment approaches outside the primary discipline.

Primary and Secondary Focus

Primary focus: Repair and treat damage to artwork and objects, including but not limited to books. Research may be required to determine the safest and most appropriate course of action for each item.
Secondary focus: Repair and treat damage to works on paper, and related items. Treatment may range from simple repairs to more complex artwork or framing-related restoration projects.

Essential Duties

Essential duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
Perform check-in and evaluation of all media types to document conditions and recommend appropriate treatment.
Collaborate and conduct required research to determine the safest and most effective treatment approach.
Repair, treat, restore, and reassemble items, including designing and fabricating missing or broken parts as needed to restore appearance and help prevent deterioration.
Prepare reports regarding conservation protocols and treatment procedures.
Prepare evaluation reports documenting item condition, treatment options, and the preservation or repair methods used.
Pack and unpack artwork for evaluation; assess the safety of works and take necessary action to secure artworks on site and off site.
Determine whether artwork or objects of any medium are in need of repair and select the safest and most effective treatment method.
Maintain operational records.
Conduct standard chemical and physical tests to identify an object's composition, original appearance, need for treatment or restoration, and appropriate preservation method.
Classify and assign registration numbers to treated items and assist with inventory control.
Organize and maintain the electronic file system for each job.
Communicate with supervisors regarding delays or any other issues that must be communicated to clients.
Perform other ad hoc duties as requested

Additional Functions

Assist with fitting and unfitting certain artworks.
Assess the construction of new transportation containers or the retrofitting of existing containers.
Work with a variety of materials, art types, and objects, including documents and books, paintings, decorative arts, textiles, metals, architectural materials, and related items.
Prepare materials for preservation, storage, or display.
Prepare reports regarding conservation protocols and treatment procedures.
Clean objects such as paper, textiles, wood, metal, glass, rock, pottery, and furniture using appropriate cleansers, solvents, soap solutions, and polishes.
Perform content handling and cleaning duties as needed, including work involving Business Personal Property, Personal Property of Others, company vehicles, equipment, company facilities, offices, work areas, exterior building areas, storage areas, and other related work areas associated with company tasks.
Read and route incoming email.
Compose and send routine correspondence.
Make copies of correspondence or other printed materials.
Share technical knowledge and expertise with others.
Travel as needed; some travel may involve an overnight stay depending on the circumstances.
Visit project sites to evaluate progress and respond to customer concerns or questions.
Coordinate with internal departments to ensure teams have the materials they need and are able to stay on schedule.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

Frequently work near moving mechanical parts.
May occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, moderate cold, and moderate heat.
Pack-in/pack-out and other outside activities may require work in adverse weather conditions.
May be exposed to smoke odor, water (Class I, Class II, Class III), microbial growth, or other substances.
May work on ladders and scaffolding at moderate heights to remove artwork from shelving or walls.

Physical Demands

The physical demands below are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, communicate verbally, hear, and occasionally taste or smell as required by job duties.
Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
Must be able to lift, wrap, carry, and load bulky or heavy items for several hours or over a period of several days.

Pay: $20.00 - $26.00 per hour
