The Niagara Falls Water Board seeks a skilled maintenance mechanic or millwright to maintain and repair heavy industrial equipment at its Wastewater Treatment Plant. Candidates MUST have a minimum of three years of experience maintaining and repairing equipment such as pumps, valves, pipes, motors. Experience as an automotive mechanic will not satisfy this experience requirement.

CONTROL MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is important mechanical maintenance, installations and supervisory work involving the installing, overhauling, repairing, testing and operating a wide variety of mechanical equipment in the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant and Water Plant. Supervision is exercised over one or more assigned workers engaged in the installation and mechanical maintenance tasks. The work is inspected by a superior for proper completion. The Control Maintenance Mechanic performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs repairs on piping and valves and installation of new equipment as may be needed;
Maintains and repairs dry feed equipment;
Overhauls positive displacement and centrifugal pumps, renews rotating elements, repacks stuffing boxes, installs and maintains mechanical seals, replaces shafts, bearings, couplings, and packings;
Cleans, overhauls, and maintains pumps, telescoping sludge valves, renews ball bearings, lubricant seals and retainers;
Overhauls motor reduction gears, renews internal parts as directed;
Cleans, overhauls, and maintains chemical feed equipment, eductors, vibratory feeders, lime slaker, mixers, rotary gate valves, and chemical solution feed pumps;
Overhauls, removes and maintains shaft type couplings and spiders in an appropriate manner;
Assists in overhaul and maintenance of carbon regeneration equipment, air pollution equipment, auxiliary and emergency diesel engines, changes lubricants and filter media at scheduled intervals, renews internal shafts, gears, bearings, bushings, retainers and seals as directed;
Maintains and repairs gas and air compressors, reduction gears, boilers, oil and gas burners, valves, heat exchangers, centrifugal pumps, compressors and welders;
Consults with Electrician and Instrument Technician as required;
Maintains and repairs make-up air units (MUAU), power roof exhausters and other heating and ventilating (H & V) equipment as needed;
Maintains other related equipment as required.
Additional Typical Work Activities Performed at the Water Facilities Department:
Repairs, maintains and calibrates solenoid valves, control valves and transfer boxes;
Cleans, overhauls and maintains chlorination equipment;
Maintains and repairs chlorine feeding equipment;
Maintains and repairs dehumidifier, TracVac sludge collection system, and the sulfur dioxide feed equipment;
Performs certain electrical, piping and instrumentation tasks related to the equipment being worked on.
Additional Typical Work Activities Performed at the Wastewater Treatment Facilities Department:
Supervises and participates in the renewal and maintenance of flights, chains, belts, sprockets, bearings, and rails of raw sludge, grit and scum collecting and conveying systems as used in the flocculation/sedimentation tanks and mechanically cleaned bar screens;
Repairs and maintains hydraulic cylinders;
Repairs, maintains and adjusts vacuum pumps and condensate pumps.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of the standard methods and practices for maintaining and repairing machinery; thorough knowledge of the proper use of hand and power tools; ability to use oxygen-acetylene welding and burning equipment; ability to perform orderly disassembly and reassembly of complex precision machinery and components; ability to properly supervise others assigned as helpers; working knowledge of rigging, hoisting and tackle procedures; ability to use gas and electric welding apparatus and metal spray equipment; working knowledge of documented and approved safety practices; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER
(A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of training or actual experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment;
OR
(B) Five (5) years of training or experience as indicated in (A).
NOTE: Three (3) years of appropriate training or experience is required. Additional education beyond high school cannot be substituted for the three (3) years of training or experience.
