Duties Description Position Summary:
The Facilities department at the University at Buffalo invites applications for our Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Utilities) position.

This position will assist in the following tasks supporting the chillers, boilers, cooling towers, ancillary utility equipment and mechanical spaces associated with the Chilled water, Hot Water and Steam systems:
1. Inspection
2. Preventative maintenance
3. Start-up
4. Operation
5. Diagnostics
6. Repair
7. Maintenance
8. Chemical treatment
9. Cleaning

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

There are no education or experience qualifications for this class
Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions
When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated

Departmental Operation Needs:

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to understand directions
The candidate should posses a general knowledge of maintenance tools and skills is required
The candidate should demonstrate a basic mechanical aptitude
This position requires traveling within and between campuses. A valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is required, or candidate should otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position
Must be able to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions
Must be able to communicate well with the entire campus community and demonstrate a willingness to provide customer service and support when advised of problems and equipment malfunctions
Be willing and able to respond to after hour calls resulting from equipment and system failures that may arise at any time of day or any day of the week
The incumbent may be required to work during adverse weather conditions to ensure continuous operation of all BMS and HVAC systems
Since the activities of other employees depend upon the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy

Physical Demands:
You will be working near and on electrical equipment, gas-fired equipment, pressure vessels, and other equipment and in conditions that could potentially be hazardous if industry best-practices and safety procedures are not followed. The successful candidate is required to have confidence in their own abilities, and be able to work safely and proficiently on this equipment and in this environment, at any time of day or day or week.

Bending, twisting, ability to transport 50 pounds, ascend ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments. Candidate must be able to position self to move, reach, push and pull the material and equipment and be able to perform the physical demands of the position as outlined in the Position Summary with or without reasonable accommodation.

Completed HVAC training
