Position Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine and moderately complex laboratory testing to support the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role follows established procedures and protocols, ensuring accuracy, quality, and timeliness of results. The MLT works under the guidance of a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or laboratory leadership for complex or unusual situations.
The MLT works with patients across the lifespan, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. Depending on location, this position may require shift work, including evenings, weekends, and on-call coverage to support 24-hour laboratory operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Perform routine and highly complex laboratory tests in assigned departments
· Collect, process, and prepare specimens for analysis
· Ensure specimen integrity and proper identification
· Follow standard operating procedures for all testing activities
· Perform and document quality control procedures
· Identify out-of-range results and follow escalation protocols
· Maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA, COLA)
· Assist with audits and inspections as requested
· Operate, maintain, and perform troubleshooting on laboratory instruments
· Identify instrument issues and escalate complex problems to the Technical Coordinator
· Perform maintenance according to established schedules
· Accurately enter and verify data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
· May assist in training new employees and laboratory students; however, is not responsible for competency assessment.
· May function as lead technologist or shift lead, coordinating workflow, prioritizing testing, and ensuring efficient laboratory operations in the absence of direct supervision.
· Collaborates with providers, nursing staff, and patients to clarify test orders, specimen requirements, and results, delivering high-quality customer service.
· Participates in process improvement initiatives, including policy and procedure development and revision, to enhance quality, efficiency, and patient care outcomes.
· Monitors, maintains, and coordinates laboratory supply inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels and uninterrupted operations.
· Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and other applications to accurately document, track, and report laboratory data.
· Maintain complete and accurate records
· Communicate effectively with healthcare providers and team members
· Assist with training of new staff under direction of MLS or supervisor
· Support process improvement initiatives and workflow efficiency efforts
· Exercises judgment within defined procedures and protocols
· Refers complex testing issues, abnormal patterns, and troubleshooting beyond standard scope to MLS, Technical Coordinator, or Laboratory Manager.
· Works under general supervision for complex scenarios
Education and Experience
· An associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology or related field - Required
· No experience required.
Certification:
· Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT/CLS) (ASCP) certification - Required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Protocols and practices in infectious disease control
· Regulatory requirements and ability to follow laboratory procedures
· Laboratory safety practices, including handling hazardous chemicals and infectious materials
· Instrument maintenance principles and quality assurance practices
· Operating laboratory instrumentation and maintaining proper functionality
· Utilizing Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and other computer software applications
· Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and healthcare staff
· Following detailed procedures and standardized workflows
· Supporting team-based quality and patient care initiatives
· Perform a full range of simple-to-complex laboratory testing across all areas of the lab
· Interpret test results, ensure accuracy, and identify inconsistencies with appropriate follow-up
· Exercise a procedure-driven, execution-focused approach to daily work
· Communicate effectively in both oral and written formats
· Provide customer service to patients and healthcare providers
· Perform phlebotomy procedures (heel sticks, finger sticks, venipuncture for all age groups)
· Assist management with monitoring, maintaining, and ordering laboratory supplies
· Work in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards
· Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) consistently
· Stand and/or walk for extended periods and lift up to approximately 45 pounds
· Work safely with needles, syringes, waste materials, and moving mechanical equipment
Pay: $29.97 - $36.00 per hour
