Position: Director of Accounting (Controller)

Functional Area: Finance & Accounting

About Magnus
Magnus Medical, Inc. (“Magnus”) is an innovative company that has developed and commercialized a SaaS-based offering to provide a FDA-cleared, personalized and targeted treatment of patients with Treatment Resistant Depression. Magnus is also developing similar solutions for other mental health conditions including but not limited to bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, and anxiety.
We are a venture-funded therapeutic medical devices company, led by industry veterans, with the mission of freeing individuals from the symptoms of depression and other neuropsychiatric diseases using personalized and accelerated neuromodulation technology. Our efforts are grounded in science, informed by clinical data, and inspired by the strength of those who live with psychiatric disease. The Role
We are looking for a hands-on, independent finance and accounting leader to own the accounting function end to end as we scale. This is a builder's role, not a caretaker's. You will run a clean, timely close, stand up the systems and controls that let us grow, and act as a real partner to leaders across the business. You will move comfortably between the detail (fixing a mapping, reviewing a reconciliation) and the big picture (a board-ready view of cash and runway), and you will bring recommendations rather than wait to be asked. Someone that is AI forward thinking willing to experiment and utilize AI tools to streamline and find efficiencies.
You will work closely with the VP Finance & Accounting and the broader leadership team, and you will help shape the processes, systems, and culture of our finance organization as it matures from scrappy to scalable.

What You Will Own

Close and reporting: Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close across the general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, and fixed assets, and deliver accurate, timely financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
Technical accounting: Serve as the company's technical accounting resource, researching and documenting positions on areas most relevant to us, including lease accounting (ASC 842), revenue recognition (ASC 606), stock-based compensation (ASC 718), and grant and collaboration accounting tied to our funded research and partnerships.
Audit and tax: Manage the annual financial statement audit end to end, own auditor relationships and PBC schedules, and coordinate federal, state, and local tax compliance with our external advisors.
Outsourced accounting partner (Countsy & ZRG Partners): Oversee and direct our outsourced accounting partner, holding them to a high standard on the close, reconciliations, and reporting, and owning the internal work that feeds them.
Controls and process: Design and document internal controls, accounting policies, and repeatable procedures that fit a fast-growing company and will hold up under scrutiny.
Cash, treasury, and runway: Own cash management, the weekly cash flow cycle, banking relationships, working capital, and burn and runway visibility that leadership can rely on.
Lender and covenant reporting: Prepare and deliver reporting to our lenders and manage covenant compliance and draw mechanics on our debt facility.
Board and investor support: Partner with the VP Finance & Accounting on board and investor reporting, financing readiness, and clean, consistent metrics that make the story and the numbers match.
Systems and automation: Lead the selection and implementation of a scalable ERP, rationalize the chart of accounts, tighten the close, and bring in automation and AI-enabled tools to make the function faster and more reliable.
Business partnering: Support every team with accounting questions, and give functional leaders the numbers and framing they need to make faster, better-informed decisions.
Team building: As the company grows, hire, mentor, and retain a high-performing accounting team.

Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA strongly preferred.
10+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including time in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Director-level role.
Industry experience in medical technology, life sciences, biotech, or healthcare. Clinical-stage or device experience is a strong plus.
Strong command of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls, with real facility in the technical areas that matter to us (ASC 842, 606, and 718, plus grant and collaboration accounting).
A track record of managing annual audits and technical accounting matters.
Demonstrated ability to build scalable accounting processes and systems in a growing company, including ERP selection or implementation experience.
Hands-on systems experience. Currently on QuickBooks Online but need to migrate to an ERP. Experience with a modern AI ERP (for example DualEntry, Campfire, Rillet, etc.), Bill.com, Expensify, and Carta is preferred.
Excellent communication and business-partnering skills, with the ability to translate complex accounting clearly for non-accountants, auditors, and senior leadership.
Comfort working as an independent contributor, a team player, and a manager, and thriving in a fast-paced, still-being-built environment.

Nice to Have

Experience at a venture-backed company (Series B) scaling toward institutional-grade reporting.
Cap table and equity operations experience (grants, refreshes, board approvals, Carta hygiene).
Exposure to lender and covenant reporting, board reporting, and KPI-driven operating environments.
Multi-entity or grant-funded environments, and experience supporting financing processes.

It may not be the right fit if you want a large team on day one or a finished playbook to inherit: Early on this is mostly a hands-on role, and you will be standing up the systems and controls as you go.

Salary Range: $190,000 - $220,000 Annually
The annual base salary range for this position based in the United States is listed above. This range is an estimate, and actual salary may vary based on Magnus' compensation practices, job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and geographic location. Magnus utilizes the full width of the range. Our compensation package also includes an annual bonus based on company goals and an equity grant.
