Full Job Description

Fully Licensed LCAS – SAIOP/SACOT Substance Use Counselor

Alternative Behavioral Solutions, Inc.

Position Summary

Alternative Behavioral Solutions, Inc. (ABS) is seeking an experienced, compassionate, and dependable fully licensed Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) to provide clinical services within our Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) and Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment (SACOT) programs.

This position is ideal for a clinician who has experience providing structured substance use disorder treatment to adults with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. The LCAS will provide individual and group counseling, complete clinical assessments, participate in treatment planning, monitor client progress, provide crisis intervention as needed, and collaborate with other members of the treatment team.

Applicants must hold a current, unrestricted, fully licensed LCAS credential in North Carolina. This position is not for an LCASA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The LCAS will provide direct clinical services to individuals participating in SAIOP and SACOT services in accordance with the individual's Person-Centered Plan, clinical needs, and applicable program requirements.

Primary responsibilities include conducting individual and group substance use disorder counseling; completing comprehensive clinical assessments and reassessments; developing and updating Person-Centered Plans and treatment goals; facilitating evidence-based substance use treatment groups; providing relapse-prevention education and interventions; and helping individuals develop recovery, coping, and independent-living skills.

The LCAS will assess and monitor substance use patterns, cravings, triggers, relapse risks, withdrawal concerns, mental health symptoms, medication adherence, social determinants of health, and other barriers that may interfere with recovery.

The clinician will provide interventions addressing substance use disorders and co-occurring behavioral health conditions within the scope of the clinician's professional license and competency.

Group Facilitation

The LCAS will facilitate structured SAIOP and/or SACOT treatment groups and maintain an engaging, therapeutic, recovery-oriented environment.

Group topics may include relapse prevention, identifying triggers, coping skills, stages of change, motivational enhancement, emotional regulation, substance use education, healthy relationships, communication skills, decision-making, recovery supports, stress management, life skills, and development of an individualized recovery plan.

The clinician is expected to maintain appropriate therapeutic boundaries and effectively manage group dynamics while encouraging participation and accountability.

Clinical Documentation

The LCAS is responsible for completing accurate, timely, and clinically appropriate documentation for services provided. Documentation responsibilities may include:

Comprehensive clinical assessments and reassessments
Person-Centered Plans and treatment plan updates
Individual and group progress notes
Continued-stay and medical-necessity documentation
Discharge and transition planning
Crisis and safety documentation
Coordination-of-care documentation
Service authorization documentation, as applicable

All documentation must comply with Alternative Behavioral Solutions, Inc. policies, North Carolina Medicaid requirements, applicable managed care organization requirements, confidentiality regulations, and professional licensing standards.

Care Coordination

The LCAS will collaborate with other members of the individual's treatment team, which may include psychiatrists, psychiatric providers, therapists, nurses, case managers, peer support specialists, primary care providers, hospitals, residential programs, detoxification programs, probation/parole personnel when applicable, and other community providers.

The clinician will assist clients with transitioning between levels of care when clinically indicated and will support continuity of treatment following hospitalization, detoxification, residential treatment, incarceration, relapse, or other significant changes in the client's condition.

Crisis Intervention and Safety

The LCAS must be able to recognize changes in an individual's clinical presentation and appropriately respond to behavioral health and substance use crises.

Responsibilities include assessing safety concerns, identifying relapse and overdose risks, developing and reviewing crisis and relapse-prevention plans, consulting with the treatment team, and coordinating higher levels of care when clinically necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

Master's degree in a behavioral health, counseling, addiction, social work, psychology, or related clinical field
Current, fully licensed LCAS credential in North Carolina
Knowledge of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders
Experience providing individual and group substance use treatment
Strong clinical assessment and documentation skills
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality
Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team
Ability to meet agency, payer, credentialing, and applicable regulatory requirements

LCASA applicants will not be considered for this particular position.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience providing SAIOP and/or SACOT services is strongly preferred.

Experience with ASAM criteria, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, co-occurring disorders, Person-Centered Planning, Medicaid documentation, utilization review, service authorization, and North Carolina behavioral health services is highly desirable.

Experience working with individuals with complex substance use, mental health, legal, housing, family, and psychosocial needs is also preferred.

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an LCAS who understands that successful substance use treatment involves more than abstinence. The ideal clinician can help individuals identify the underlying patterns, triggers, environmental factors, behavioral health symptoms, and life circumstances that contribute to continued substance use.

The successful candidate will be clinically strong, dependable, organized, nonjudgmental, recovery-oriented, and comfortable working with individuals at different stages of change.
