Position Overview
We are seeking a highly organized, knowledgeable, and sales-focused Outfitting Specialist to join our team.
The Outfitting Specialist supports the sales team and our customers throughout the outfitting, rigging, and new-boat build process. This position helps customers select the systems, electronics, accessories, equipment, and upgrades that best fit how they plan to use their boat.
The Outfitting Specialist is responsible for preparing estimates, identifying required parts, coordinating outboard rigging projects, creating and managing work orders, and overseeing outfitting jobs from the initial sale through final delivery.
The ideal candidate has strong product knowledge, enjoys helping customers, is confident recommending upgrades, and can successfully manage multiple projects in a fast-paced dealership environment.
ResponsibilitiesSales Support and Customer Consultation
- Partner with the sales team to support new boat sales, new builds, repowers, and customer deliveries.
- Meet with customers to understand how they plan to use their boat and recommend appropriate systems, equipment, and accessories.
- Educate customers on available options, upgrades, and product benefits.
- Recommend and sell marine electronics, navigation systems, audio systems, lighting, batteries, charging systems, trolling motors, safety equipment, canvas, seating, anchors, windlasses, trailers, and other accessories.
- Identify opportunities to enhance the customer’s boating experience while increasing outfitting and accessory sales.
- Provide professional and timely communication throughout the outfitting process.
Estimates, Parts Planning, and Work Orders
- Prepare detailed outfitting and rigging estimates for customer approval.
- Review boat specifications and build requirements to determine all parts, materials, labor, and equipment needed.
- Create accurate work orders with clear installation and rigging instructions.
- Build complete parts lists and verify compatibility before work begins.
- Coordinate with the Parts Department to confirm pricing, availability, and ordering timelines.
- Monitor backordered or special-order parts and communicate potential delays.
- Obtain customer approval for changes, additional work, or upgraded equipment.
- Maintain accurate documentation, notes, approvals, and job records.
New Builds and Outboard Rigging
- Manage new boat outfitting and outboard rigging projects from the initial sale through completion.
- Determine the rigging components required for outboard installations, including controls, gauges, steering systems, propellers, batteries, harnesses, fuel components, and related equipment.
- Coordinate the installation of engines, electronics, accessories, and other customer-selected systems.
- Work closely with Sales, Service, Parts, technicians, and outside vendors to keep projects moving efficiently.
- Monitor job progress, parts availability, labor requirements, and completion deadlines.
- Identify missing components or potential installation issues before they delay the project.
- Ensure each build is completed according to the approved estimate, manufacturer requirements, and customer expectations.
Project Coordination and Quality Control
- Assist with scheduling and prioritizing outfitting and rigging work.
- Coordinate technician assignments with the Service Manager and other department leaders.
- Serve as the central point of communication for the sales team regarding the status of new builds and rigging projects.
- Schedule and manage outside vendors or subcontractors when needed.
- Regularly review project progress and follow up on outstanding work.
- Inspect completed jobs for accuracy, appearance, functionality, and overall quality.
- Confirm that all approved equipment and accessories have been installed.
- Help coordinate final inspections, sea trials, customer orientations, and deliveries.
- Ensure completed work orders properly document the work performed.
Delivery and Administration
- Review completed work orders, parts, and labor charges for accuracy.
- Finalize outfitting and rigging invoices and confirm that all customer approvals are documented.
- Communicate completion dates and delivery readiness to the sales team and customer.
- Provide customers with an overview of installed systems and accessories when needed.
- Maintain organized and timely paperwork.
- Help ensure all outfitting and rigging work is properly billed and collected.
Additional Duties
- Assist with day-to-day Sales, Service, and Parts department operations.
- Support the Service Manager, Sales Manager, and dealership team as needed.
- Maintain current knowledge of marine systems, electronics, outboards, accessories, and manufacturer products.
- Attend product and manufacturer training when available.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
- Strong customer service, sales, and communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple builds, work orders, and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail when preparing estimates and parts lists.
- Confidence recommending products, systems, accessories, and upgrades.
- Professional phone, email, and in-person communication skills.
- Computer proficiency and the ability to learn dealership software.
- Ability to work effectively with customers, salespeople, technicians, vendors, and department managers.
- Positive attitude and team-oriented mindset.
- Ability to stay organized and composed in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
- Previous experience in marine outfitting, rigging, service writing, parts, boat sales, project coordination, or a related position.
- Experience with new boat builds, repowers, or outboard rigging.
- Knowledge of marine electronics, electrical systems, steering systems, controls, batteries, accessories, trailers, and outboard engines.
- Familiarity with marine manufacturers, installation requirements, and product compatibility.
- Experience in the marine, automotive, powersports, RV, equipment, or mechanical industries.
- Previous sales experience with a proven ability to recommend and upsell products and services.
- Passion for boating and the marine lifestyle.
