Position Summary:
Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. This includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
Essential Job Functions:
Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines. Operator must be able to verify set ups against program information.
Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts.

Education/Experience/Skills:
Operation and Control -- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
Operation Monitoring -- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly. Able to read and interpret precision measurement tools to verify work.
Mathematics – Proficient in the use of mathematics to solve problems.
Equipment Selection -- Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
Troubleshooting -- Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
Reading Comprehension -- Understanding written sentences and paragraphs and engineering drawings in in performance of daily duties.
Quality Control Analysis -- Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
Equipment Maintenance -- Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
Total Quality Maintenance – Understanding when remedial maintenance is required and be able to communicate to Maintenance Technicians. Able to clean and perform preventative maintenance tasks on machinery between cycles.
Active Listening -- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
Active Learning -- Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.

Equipment To Be Used:
Operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations. Understanding of inspection tools and able to use for in-process inspection and verification.

Pay: $15.00 - $22.00 per hour
