Department: Fleet Maintenance / Shop
Reports To: Shop Foreman, Shop Manager, or Operations Manager
Position Summary
The Entry-Level Diesel Mechanic assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of company trucks, trailers, construction equipment, and other fleet vehicles. Working under the guidance of experienced mechanics and shop leadership, this position provides an excellent opportunity to develop mechanical skills through hands-on training. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, mechanical aptitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship.

Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
- Assist experienced mechanics with repairs and preventative maintenance on diesel and gasoline-powered trucks, trailers, and construction equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, tire inspections, fluid checks, and basic brake inspections.
- Help inspect vehicles and equipment for mechanical issues and report findings to senior mechanics or shop management.
- Learn to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems under supervision.
- Assist with scheduled preventative maintenance and equipment inspections.
- Help maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Clean and prepare vehicles and equipment before and after repairs.
- Perform basic operational checks after repairs under the direction of senior mechanics.
Shop Support
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Clean shop equipment, tools, and workstations.
- Assist with moving equipment and organizing the shop as needed.
- Follow proper procedures for disposing of used oil, filters, fluids, and other shop waste.
Parts and Inventory
- Assist with receiving, organizing, and stocking parts and shop supplies.
- Retrieve parts and tools needed for repairs.
- Notify the Shop Foreman when supplies or commonly used parts are running low.
- Help maintain organized parts storage areas.
Field Support
- Occasionally assist experienced mechanics with field service calls at job sites.
- Help load and unload tools, equipment, and replacement parts.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of company service vehicles.
Tools and Equipment
- Safely operate standard hand tools and basic shop equipment.
- Learn proper use of pneumatic, electric, and hydraulic shop equipment.
- Maintain personal tools, if applicable, and properly care for company-owned tools and equipment.
Teamwork
- Work closely with experienced mechanics to develop mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
- Accept coaching, instruction, and feedback to improve technical abilities.
- Maintain a positive attitude and contribute to a productive team environment.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Completion of a diesel technology, automotive technology, or heavy equipment program is preferred but not required.
- Previous mechanical experience through school, internships, personal projects, farming, military service, or similar experience is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of hand tools and mechanical systems.
- Strong desire to learn and build a career in diesel mechanics.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or willingness to obtain one is a plus.
- Bilingual in Spanish is useful.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Immediately report injuries, unsafe conditions, or damaged equipment.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Properly wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including:
- Safety glasses
- Safety shoes with impact protection
- Gloves
- Hearing protection
- Dust mask or respirator when required
Working Conditions
- Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Environment may include noise, dust, grease, heat, cold, and exposure to moving equipment.
- Occasional travel to job sites may be required.
- Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach.
- Frequently use hands to handle tools and equipment.
- Occasionally climb, balance, crouch, or crawl.
- Frequently lift and carry materials or parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work around heavy equipment and moving vehicles safely.

Pay: $27.00 - $35.00 per hour
