Full Job Description

Higher Education DIRECTOR OF STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES (FINANCIAL AID) - Gnomon

Location: Los Angeles, CA (On-site, with limited travel)

Reports to: Executive Director of Operations

Gnomon is recognized globally as one of the premier visual-effects and animation schools, training artists for careers in film, television, and games. With programs designed and taught by working industry professionals, Gnomon specializes in computer graphics education for careers in the entertainment industry.

The Role

The Director of Student Financial Services (DSFS) provides strategic leadership, oversight, and administration of all student financial aid programs and student financing initiatives at Gnomon. This position serves as the institution's primary authority on Title IV compliance, California state financial aid programs, financial literacy initiatives, regulatory reporting, default prevention, and financial aid operations.

The DSFS is responsible for ensuring full compliance with federal, state, accreditor, and institutional regulations while delivering exceptional service and support to students and families. The DSFS works collaboratively with the senior leadership to support student success, institutional compliance, and operational excellence.

What You’ll Do

Direct and oversee all Financial Aid operations and student financing initiatives for the college.
Develop departmental goals, service standards, performance metrics, and operational procedures; supervise, mentor, train, and evaluate Financial Aid staff.
Provide strategic recommendations to institutional leadership regarding student financing, borrowing trends, and financial aid policy, and serve as the institutional subject matter expert. You will participate in institutional planning and provide recommendations that support student retention, persistence, and financial wellness.
Administer all federal, state, institutional, scholarship, and private loans while ensuring compliance with all Title IV regulations and requirements; maintain annual budgets and ensure timely reconciliation of all federal and state aid programs.
Oversee student eligibility determination, verification, awarding, packaging, and aid disbursement processes, providing review and approval for special circumstances.
Oversee the Federal Work Study administration.
Maintain current knowledge of Title IV regulations, Federal Student Aid guidance, and CA Student Aid Commission regulations, while also keeping a pulse on any regulatory changes with applicable state, federal, accreditor, and institutional regulations; devise and implementing necessary operational updates.
Perform regular internal audits of financial aid processes for external audit readiness, and develop corrective action plans & remediation efforts if necessary.
Coordinate preparation and submission of all required financial aid and regulatory reports; including FISAP, IPEDS, NSLDS Transfer Student Monitoring and Enrollment Reporting, state grant reports, annual compliance audits, and other regulatory submissions; monitor institutional Cohort Default Rates (CDR) and develop default prevention initiatives.
Support our prospective and current students & families with exception customer service and guidance on financial aid eligibility, financing options, and financial planning; promote financial literacy and responsible borrowing; support student retention efforts with proactive counseling and intervention strategies.
Serve as liaison with the U.S. Department of Education, California Student Aid Commission, lenders, loan servicers, auditors, accreditors, and other regulatory agencies. Collaborate with Gnomon leadership across departments to support institutional collaboration.

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required; Master's degree in Business Admin, Higher Education, Finance, or related field preferred.
Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in financial aid administration within higher education.
Minimum three (3) years of leadership or supervisory experience.
Demonstrated expertise in Title IV administration, compliance, and regulatory reporting.
Experience administering California state financial aid programs, managing financial aid audits, reconciliations, and regulatory reporting requirements required.
Experience in private, nonprofit, or proprietary postsecondary institution; Veterans Affairs education benefits; management of CDR; working with student information and financial aid management systems preferred.
Exceptional organizational and project-management skills; able to manage concurrent deadlines and complex documentation cycles.
Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to interpret and explain regulations clearly.
Collaborative, diplomatic approach with confidence to enforce standards and guide executive decision-making.
