About Marathon Communications

Marathon Communications is a leading Los Angeles-based public affairs firm specializing in land use and development. Our projects span market-rate and affordable housing, cultural institutions, energy storage and commercial/retail developments. We work on some of the region’s most dynamic and complex development proposals and value collaboration at the intersection of politics, community, and urban transformation.

Position Summary

We are seeking a sociable, and strategic thinker with a strong interest in politics, development, and community engagement. The Associate is a key member of our entrepreneurial team, responsible for project management, stakeholder engagement, and the execution of outreach, government affairs, and communications initiatives.

This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about urbanism, placemaking, architecture, and/or planning and who thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement strategic outreach and communications plans
Project account management, including overseeing timeline, deliverables, and coordinating resources on behalf of client
Write reports, memos, presentations, and public communications materials
Maintain well-organized digital files and documentation
Monitor trends in urban development, land use, and public policy
Build and maintain relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders (e.g., elected officials, community leaders/organizations, developers, and residents)
Coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of communications and outreach strategies
Attend and/or support public meetings, briefings, and other community engagement efforts

Preferred Education

Bachelor’s degree (in Urban Studies, Political Science, Communications, Planning, Public Affairs, or related fields)

Preferred Skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
Experience using outreach platforms like MailChimp, SurveyMonkey, NationBuilder, etc.

Experience

2–5 years in public affairs, politics, government, campaign, urban development, or related fields preferred
