Job Title: Financial Aid Officer

Reports To: Director of Financial Aid

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Cerritos, CA 90703

$23 – $28 an hour (depending on experience)

Job Description

Develop, negotiate and finalize student financial plans consistent with financial planning policies and procedures and with Federal/State regulations for awarding aid. Answer light to medium phones servicing new and continuing students including the general public. Work closely with new, continuing and re-entry students and their families to ensure the plan and re-plan continue to best meet the families' needs. Counsel students on all acceptances and other matters related directly to the student financial plan. This position reports to the Director of Financial Aid. Internal contacts include staff from the following school departments including, but not limited to, Admissions, Accounting/Business office, Registrar, etc. External contacts include initial contact with all incoming students/parents and auditors.

Responsibilities

· Work cohesively with Admissions Representatives in order to facilitate outstanding service to prospective students and their parents.

· Answer light to medium phones servicing new and continuing students including the general public.

· Advise and educate individuals or organizations on acquiring and managing debt.

· Ensure timely collection of both aid and student payments. Audit student account postings for accuracy, compliance, and promptness.

· Demonstrate proficiency in timely collections. Interface with default prevention institutions to maintain compliance with cohort default rate requirements.

· Create Plans and explain the Plan and the student's/parent's rights and responsibilities for each aid source. Negotiate Payment Plans. Be able to develop Student Financial Plans in concert with Institute procedures and knowledge of Federal regulations.

· Assist students/parents with the completion of the FAFSA, and review the resulting ISIR.

· Assign the appropriate budget to a student and package the student (award their aid).

· Assist the Director of Financial Aid in managing the team to meet daily and strategic operations of the Financial Aid Office.

· Ensure that aid is paid to students' accounts in a timely manner.

· Responsible for complete and accurate files and paperwork.

· Create student funding in school database system

· Complete Basic Verification/QA and C Code Requirements.

· Utilize reports as appropriate to job duties.

· Demonstrate proficiency in timely collections.

· Maintain consistently clean files shown through Training Assessments for Compliance with Federal/State regulations, school policies and procedures.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

· Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

· Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

· Ability to verify and assess student eligibility for financial aid.

· Ability to analyze and solve problems.

· Interviewing skills.

· Ability to make evaluative judgments.

· Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.

· Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

· Organizing and coordinating skills.

· Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies concerning the provision of financial aid to students.

· Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements.

· Knowledge of data management systems and processes.

· Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.

· Knowledge of the policies and eligibility requirements of a range of federal, state, and agency scholarship programs for tertiary students.

· Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and over the telephone.

Position Requirements

· An Associate degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, business, or related focus of study required.

· 3 + previous years of experience working with and technical knowledge of student financial aid and student accounts.

· High comfort level within a computerized environment (use of EDExpress, NSLDS and COD, CampusVue preferred).

· Ability to make small group presentations as well as skill in interacting on a one-on-one basis. Strong verbal communication skills with attention to detail are critical in this role.

· Bilingual English/Spanish is highly preferred.
