Support Services Corporal

Department: Detention Center

Salary Range: $52,000-$55,500 Yearly

Employment Type: Full time

Work Schedule: 85.5 Bi-Weekly, TBD

Job Summary

The Support Services Corporal serves as a vital operational support supervisor responsible for ensuring the efficient daily functioning of the Kershaw County Detention Center. This position focuses on inmate services, facility logistics, inventory management, sanitation, laundry and operational support while maintaining the safety, security, and orderly operation of the facility. The Support Services Corporal serves as a flexible resource capable of assisting all shifts and responding to operational needs as they arise

Key Responsibilities/Duties

Provide operational support to all divisions and shifts as directed by the chain of command.
Assist with staffing shortages by supplementing housing units, intake, transportation, or other operational assignments.
Respond to emergencies and critical incidents in accordance with facility policy.
Supervise and manage inmate canteen.
Conduct routine security walk-throughs and inspections throughout the facility.
Assist supervisors in maintaining the safe, secure, and efficient operation of the detention center.
Maintain accountability and inventory of all inmate-issued property and facility supplies, including but not limited to inmate mattresses, inmate uniforms, shoes and footwear, hygiene supplies, cleaning chemicals and sanitation products, laundry supplies, bedding, linens, sheets, blankets, and towels.
Maintaining accurate inventory records.
Oversee facility sanitation programs.
Ensure housing units and common areas meet cleanliness standards.
Coordinate inmate worker assignments related to sanitation.
Conduct sanitation inspections.
Ensure cleaning equipment and chemicals are properly maintained and secured.
Promote compliance with detention center sanitation policies.
Coordinate and oversee the daily facilitation of: Inmate canteen distribution, inmate vending operations, laundry exchanges (uniform exchanges, linen exchanges, sheet exchanges, laundry bag exchanges, monthly blanket exchanges).
Assistance with inmate meal service and food distribution.
Ensure all distributions are completed safely, securely, accurately, and in accordance with facility policy.
Supervise inmate worker details assigned to support service functions.
Provide guidance and direction while maintaining security standards.
Demonstrate professionalism and accountability.
Assist supervisors with operational projects and special assignments.
Serve as a resource for facility operations and logistics.
Any other job assigned.
Must maintain 40 hours of mandatory in-service training each year.

Core Competencies: Requirements & Qualifications

Experience: Candidates are required to possess a minimum of one year of experience in corrections.
Education and Certification: Applicants must have successfully completed the Basic Correctional Officers Certification and hold a Class II Officer certification or higher. An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience may also be considered.
Physical and Technical Requirements: The role requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and flexibility to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and on-call assignments. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
Core Competencies: Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to assess and judge data, people, or objects based on observable characteristics while exercising sound judgment and rapid decision-making. Excellent communication skills are essential for relaying information, providing instructions to subordinates, and speaking publicly with clarity and confidence. Furthermore, the ability to read complex informational documents and prepare various professional reports—such as inmate counts, investigative findings, and court correspondence—using proper formatting, grammar, and style is required.
