Position Overview
We are seeking a dependable, hardworking Barn Assistant to support daily horse care and barn operations at our facility in Sharon, Vermont.
This is a hands-on, physical role that is essential to keeping the barn running safely and smoothly while ensuring excellent care for our herd.
This part-time position averages approximately 20–25 hours per week and includes weekends and morning and afternoon blocks). We work with our team members to establish a regular schedule that supports both individual availability and the needs of the barn, while collaborating to ensure coverage for weekends, vacations, and other time away throughout the year.
Competitive hourly pay is offered based on experience and qualifications in addition to paid time off, 401K, and paid holidays.
Responsibilities
Horse Care
- Feed horses according to established routines
- Turn horses in and out safely
- Clean stalls and maintain bedding
- Ensure horses have access to clean, fresh water
- Apply blankets, fly gear, and other equipment as needed
- Monitor horse health and behavior and communicate concerns promptly
- Assist with grooming and basic handling
Barn and Facility Care
- Keep barn spaces clean, organized, and safe
- Maintain aisles, tack areas, and feed rooms
- Clean and store equipment properly
- Assist with paddock, fencing, and facility upkeep
- Follow established barn procedures and safety practices
Team and Volunteer Support
- Help create a welcoming environment for volunteers and visitors
- Communicate clearly with staff and leadership
- Support volunteers by modeling safe and effective horse handling practices
- Participate in team meetings and training opportunities as needed
Qualifications
- Previous hands-on experience working with horses
- Comfortable handling horses safely and confidently
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take initiative
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication skills
- Positive, respectful attitude with both people and animals
Requirements
We are looking for candidates with a minimum of one year of consistent, hands-on experience providing day-to-day care for horses in a barn, farm, or comparable setting. Qualified candidates will have practical experience with routine horse care, including feeding, turnout, and handling, stall and barn maintenance, and recognizing changes in horse behavior, condition, or general well-being.
Because this role includes independently caring for our herd, successful candidates will have experience with the daily custodial care of horses beyond riding, lessons, or occasionnal horse handling. This foundational experience is an essential qualification for the Barn Assistant.
Other requirements include the following:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical barn work
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Availability for weekends and split shifts
- High school diploma or equivalent
Work Environment
- This is an active, outdoor role at a busy equine facility and includes exposure to weather, dust, mud, and physical labor.
