Full Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to lead core accounting operations for a mission-driven organization in Detroit, Michigan. This position will oversee daily financial activities, support accurate and timely reporting, and help ensure compliance across grant-funded and nonprofit accounting functions. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting knowledge, hands-on leadership experience, and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

Responsibilities:

Direct the monthly close process, ensuring financial records are completed accurately and on schedule.
Manage general ledger activity, including journal entries, reconciliations, and review of account balances.
Oversee grant-related accounting to support proper tracking, reporting, and compliance with funding requirements.
Prepare and review financial information used for internal reporting, budgeting, and external audit support.
Lead nonprofit budgeting activities by monitoring actual results, analyzing variances, and coordinating with stakeholders.
Supervise accounting staff, provide day-to-day guidance, and support the development of a productive team environment.
Partner with internal departments to resolve accounting issues and improve the flow of financial information.
Support audit readiness by maintaining organized documentation and responding to requests related to financial statement reviews.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
At least 5 years of accounting experience in a nonprofit or government environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of grant accounting, month-end close procedures, and nonprofit budgeting.
Recent supervisory experience of 2 or more years with responsibility for at least two direct reports.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for analysis, reporting, and reconciliation work.
Experience with general ledger management, journal entries, account reconciliations, and audit support.
Effective communication skills with a collaborative approach and the ability to work well across teams.
