Full Job Description

JOB TITLE: Development Director

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

POSITION STATUS: Full-time, Exempt

SCHEDULE: Generally 40 hours per week Monday through Friday. Normal workdays will be 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Friday. Due to the nature of the work, there will be times when the work week exceeds 40 hours. Occasional weekends and evenings may be required for Board meetings, training, donor cultivation and events, campus activities, and other necessary job-related activities.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Development Director, under the general direction of the Executive Director of Amarillo Children’s Home (ACH), is charged with the implementation and oversight of all fundraising operations, systems, and models. This role requires expertise in fundraising, including personal giving, corporate sponsorships, planned giving, acquisition of major gifts, and fundraising events. The Development Director will work closely with contracted marketing teams. The Development Director will maintain a high level of integrity personally and professionally, with an understanding that their role is a liaison for and a public face of the organization.

Essential Functions:

The Development Director will

Create and manage ACH Development Plan to meet organization’s fundraising goals while supporting long-term relationships with donors. Annual fundraising budget = $1.5 million.
Communicate with excellence the vision of ACH to donors and the ACH team alike, thereby equipping both to be effective ambassadors for Amarillo Children’s Home.
Supervise and lead the Development Coordinator. Effectively collaborate with the Executive Director, Board of Trustees, and Development Committee.
Hold an unwavering commitment to ACH’s mission and be equipped to represent the organization in a professional manner to the nonprofit community and to other stakeholders, including federal/state agencies, foundations, corporations, and individual donors.

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Fundraising Responsibilities:

Lead and manage ACH’s overall development efforts to meet the annual budget needs
Operate fundraising programs and activities while adhering to the Board approved annual budget
Work with the Development Team to create a system by which all fundraising models/systems are evaluated for success and maximum effectiveness
Operate in accordance with the highest traditions of professional ethics and in adherence to the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice

Development Office Infrastructure:

Create and manage effective systems to support all development models and operations
Prioritize raising funds in line with Board approved annual budget and be familiar with budget’s income and expenses
Oversee the management and effective usage of donor databases
Supervise donor and gift data entry - Ensuring a system of precise data entry for all donor gifts to ACH
Ensure and manage a system of effective and prompt thanking of ACH donors
Manage the pledge reminder and acknowledgement programs
Create and manage a system of effective grant management and response
Train and supervise development volunteers and staff

Donor Relations:

Be attuned to and honor donor intentions, and ensure the intent/will of the donor is followed
Communicate the value of ACH by understanding and embodying the vision of the organization
Express to the donor a passion about ACH’s life change opportunities
Communicate value and worth to the donor and potential donor
Be a good listener, able to discern a donor’s need, and respond appropriately
Be knowledgeable and mindful of ACH’s overall mission in order to guide donor intent to meet ACH’s goals
Meet the donor goals and objectives outlined in the annual Development Plan
Implement a system of donor cultivation by which effective two way relationships with potential donors and donor groups are established

Board of Trustees Relations:

Work with the Board to develop and manage strategies to meet annual budget needs through fundraising
Provide strategic direction for the Board’s Development Committee
Provide Development Reports to present at Board meetings

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required
Experience in fundraising and marketing preferred.
Proven track record of raising funds from diverse sources, including major gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies
Exceptional follow through skills - able to ensure that all areas of responsibility are addressed and completed in a timely manner
Ability to work as a leader and part of a team
Experience in donor cultivation; grant writing, preparation and management; and organizing and producing special events
Strong interpersonal, supervision, administration and management skills
Knowledge of and connections to Amarillo’s philanthropic and funding community
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
Excellent verbal and written skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office systems
Familiarity with donor tracking systems – able to be proficient with the donor database used by ACH and to evaluate other potential databases
Legal understanding of nonprofit organizations, including IRS and other fundraising regulations
Ability to act as an encourager and communicate value and worth
Sound judgment, professionalism and a positive attitude
Resourcefulness, creativity and strong problem solving skills

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk and sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or technology; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Specific vision abilities are needed to proofread copy and assess color print or electronic material. This is a full-time position that may require travel and attendance at events and activities on occasional weeknights and/or weekends. The employee must be able to travel independently across the ACH campus and drive across the Texas Panhandle.
