Old Town Cape is a community driven, nonprofit organization that utilizes the Main Street Approach™ to preserve, promote, revitalize, and enrich the historic, cultural, and economic landscapes of downtown Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Public Relations & Events Director to lead our organization’s communications, events, and volunteers. The Public Relations & Events Director is a key leadership role. They are responsible for planning and executing over 12 annual organizational events, managing social media and public communications, and recruiting and coordinating volunteers. This role works collaboratively with the entire team to support the mission of Old Town Cape and contribute meaningfully to the vibrancy of downtown Cape Girardeau.
Key Responsibilities
Event Planning & Coordination
- Plan, coordinate, and execute a variety of events and special projects designed to attract visitors to downtown Cape Girardeau.
- Maintaining an up-to-date annual events calendar and ensuring accurate event listings on the website
- Scheduling and leading event-related committee meetings; recording minutes, delegating tasks, and monitoring progress
- Coordinating event logistics including permits, street closures, vendor communications, and partnerships with city departments (Police, Fire, and Public Works)
- Overseeing event accounting and processing financial documentation
- Assist the Executive Director with event Budgets
- Managing event setup, breakdown, and onsite support
- Creating and updating event documentation (e.g., spreadsheets, contracts, reports, and evaluations)
- Managing detailed action plans and timelines in Trello
Marketing & Communications
- Develop and schedule engaging, timely social media content across platforms (Facebook and Instagram)
- Manage all organizational events on the Old Town Cape Facebook page
- Draft and distribute bi-weekly subscription-based email newsletters (GiveButter)
- Submit design requests through Trello for marketing collateral including social media graphics, email visuals, and printed materials
- Design & create graphics for events/promotions and merchandise design
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date event information on the organization’s website
- Coordinate with local media outlets for event promotions, including TV and radio interviews
- Write and distribute press releases and maintain an updated media contact list
- Management of sponsorships within marketing materials and maintaining up-to-date graphic specifications for our donors
Volunteer & Community Engagement
- Recruit, schedule, and manage volunteers for events
- Maintain the Volunteer Facebook group
- Support and engage with downtown merchants via the Old Town Cape merchants page
- Build and sustain inclusive, professional relationships with downtown businesses, volunteers, and community stakeholders
Other Duties
- Attend Board of Directors meetings and report on relevant activities, as needed
- Supervise and mentor interns
- Support overall team initiatives and organizational goals
- Embrace and promote the Main Street Four-Point Approach
- Attend workshops, trainings, and conferences offered by Missouri Main Street Connection (MMSC) and the National Main Street Center
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment
- Build and maintain respectful, non-discriminatory relationships with vendors, partners, and the public
- Be the staff liaison for the Promotion Committee
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Competencies

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic with a commitment to community engagement
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms
- Graphic Design/Canva experience
Preferred:
- Experience with Canva, Mailchimp, GiveButter, WordPress, and Trello
- Familiarity with CRM/database systems
- Quickbooks Online
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, ideally in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Hospitality, Business, or a related field
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional event coordination experience

Pay: $47,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
