Full Job Description

Fabric8Labs, headquartered in sunny San Diego, CA, is revolutionizing advanced manufacturing with next-generation 3D printing technology. We're looking for an Applications Engineer (Level II or III) to lead customer programs as we scale our patented Electrochemical Additive Manufacturing (ECAM) process for global production.

ECAM uses precise, room-temperature metal deposition to unlock geometries and applications that conventional metal AM can't reach. Since announcing our agreement to be acquired by TDK Corporation, we're rapidly expanding our team to advance this disruptive technology across a wide range of electronics components—including data center infrastructure, wireless communications, and power electronics.

As an Applications Engineer, you'll be a crucial part of the team, working as the liaison between customers and internal engineering teams in a fast-paced product development environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Work directly with customers and our internal engineering teams to deliver high-quality prototypes and advance customers through learning cycles and manufacturing qualification stages. In this role, you will guide development of each product from initial proof of concept into high-volume production.
Serve as the technical project manager for multiple customer development projects, including defining and aligning customer requirements, developing a timeline and resource plan to meet the requirements, and driving execution.
Coordinate closely with teams operating 3D printers to produce customer parts. Lead and/or perform post-printing inspection and test activities. Prepare technical reports and presentations to summarize results and status.
Collaborate with internal R&D teams to iterate printing parameters and refine current systems based on direct experiences with customers.
Become an expert in Fabric8Labs technology and manufacturing process, including its advantages relative to competing additive technologies and conventional manufacturing methods. Maintain up-to-date situational awareness on the status of mature and emerging manufacturing technologies.

Required Skills and Experience

3-5 years relevant professional experience as an applications, mechanical, manufacturing, and/or project engineer.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Material Science or related field.
Demonstrated project and technical leadership in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Strong project management skills with the ability to lead complex projects with interdisciplinary stakeholders. Must be able to foresee and mitigate project risks and potential issues, and to effectively communicate plans to customers and internal stakeholders.
High degree of technical acumen and systems level thinking. Ability to develop effective mental models to understand and manage complex systems.
Experience in manufacturing of metal parts and an understanding of available processes, quality inspection techniques and reporting methods. Understanding of test methods for determining material properties and sub-component performance. Understanding of materials science fundamentals and how microstructure affects metallurgical properties of various metal alloys.
Hands-on experience with 3D modeling: parametric design and analysis of solid models (e.g. in Solidworks), as well as manipulation of 3D design files. Strong grasp of GD&T and the ability to read, analyze, and author engineering drawings
Growth mindset with a determined, results-driven approach to meet customer objectives. Ability to comfortably navigate ambiguity and resolve unexpected challenges.
You are regularly willing and able to put in the extra effort and time to ensure that customer deliveries are met.

Preferred Skills and Experience

Masters degree in engineering and/or business (MBA)
Project management certificate or PMP
Deep expertise in one or more key market verticals such as: thermal management, electronics, semiconductor packaging, RF, or medical devices.
Experience with electrochemistry and/or inorganic chemistry
Experience with developing or programming in Python or similar

This position requires working onsite, M-F, at the San Diego office (11075 Roselle Street, San Diego, CA 92121)
Routinely required to sit; walk; talk; hear; use hands to type, handle, and feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, and stretch. Routinely required to move around the facility.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
May require travel (domestic and/or international) dependent on business needs, up to 20%
