Job Summary: Supervises and instructs a team of grooming apprentices.
% Essential Job Functions:
40 Provides technical skills training for a group of grooming apprentices. Ensures apprentices are able to groom at Groombar standards and achieve key performance indicator (“KPI”) goals upon graduation from the program. Conducts student grooming and written examinations. Partners with Field Leadership and Director of Grooming to train new Lead Groomers in the job.
10 Acts as immediate supervisor for students while in the apprentice program. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, and in consultation with the Field Leadership and human resources, including: recruiting and selection for the apprentice program; performance management; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Ensures student responsibilities, authorities, and accountabilities are defined and understood.
15 Acts as interim supervisor for bathers and/or groomers in the absence of a Lead Groomer and/or Salon Manager: provides coaching, lead work direction, technical skills building, and quality supervision; models safe dog handling techniques and customer experience excellence. As needed, manages performance, including rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Ensures employee responsibilities, authorities, and accountabilities are defined and understood.
15 Provides comprehensive grooming services in a salon environment. Greets customers and their dog(s) by name and communicates a best-estimate pick-up time. Performs needs assessment for each assigned dog: evaluates the condition of eyes, ears, nails, teeth, coat and skin, and suggests de-matting services, short haircut, additional services and/or products to customers based on assessment, as appropriate. Describes risks and options for all suggested add-ons to customers and communicates knowledgeably about all of Groombar’s products and services, including daycare, nutrition, training and dental cleaning. Obtains detailed instructions from customers regarding the haircut desired, takes comprehensive notes and memorializes same into each customer’s account for future reference. Clearly communicates fees associated with all services. Notifies owners when service has been completed, and ensures hourly contact occurs thereafter, until pet is picked up. Provides excellent internal and external customer service in all areas of responsibility, and executes “GOT HEART” strategy during every customer check in.
15 With human resources, participates in selection process of bather and groomer applicants.
05 Ensures the salon environment is safe, clean, and free of hazards and that equipment and tools are operating as intended. Responds appropriately to personnel and/or dog injuries, and ensures both employees and dogs receive prompt and appropriate medical care, as needed. Performs other salon-related duties as assigned by the Field Leadership, as needed.
Positions Supervised (Direct Reports):
- Grooming Apprentices; may provide lead work direction to bathers and groomers.
Minimum Education or Training Equivalent to:
- Certified Master Groomer or equivalent is preferred
Minimum Years of Additional Related Experience:
- Three years’ previous experience as a dog groomer in a professional dog grooming salon setting is desired.
- One year previous experience providing staff supervision in a grooming salon strongly preferred.
Special Qualifications (Skills, Abilities, Licenses):
- Strong teaching, supervisory, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated skill with a variety of traditional and creative grooming techniques, including: trimming, clipping, cutting, stripping, hand-stripping, brushing, and coloring/dyeing.
- Able to successfully complete Groombar’s skills assessment test, as administered by the VP of Services or Director of Grooming.
- Knowledgeable of a wide variety of grooming tools, including: brushes, combs, scissors, grooming clippers, rakes, mat knives, and grooming stripping knives.
- Knowledgeable of a wide variety of dog breeds and dog breed standards.
- Friendly, approachable, cooperative, flexible, and able to shift focus as needed.
- Able to professionally and effectively interact and communicate, verbally and in writing, with staff, customers, vendors, and a public from diverse cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, prioritize and accurately perform multiple tasks, and efficiently meet deadlines and changing priorities.
- Able to consistently demonstrate good judgment and decision-making skills.
Physical Requirements (Approximate Percent per 8-hour Workday):
- Constant visual stimulation, including close vision (up to 100%).
- Constant standing (up to 100%).
- Constant contact with water, shampoos and other bathing products, and hair (up to 100%)
- Frequent squatting, bending, reaching, pulling, and twisting (up to 60%).
- Frequent lifting of dogs up to 30 pounds without assistance (up to 60%)
- Occasional walking around building (up to 20%).
Pay: $30.00 - $33.00 per hour
