Independent Delivery Driver, 1099 Contractor
Location: Wilmington, NC
Job Type: Contract, 1099
Pay: Typically $5–$25+ per claimed order or route, plus tips where applicable
Overview
Hempire Innovations is looking for dependable independent delivery drivers to help complete local deliveries in Wilmington and nearby areas.
This is a delivery-only 1099 contractor role. It is not a storefront, retail, packaging, fulfillment, or general operations position.
Approved drivers may be added to private company channels where available deliveries and routes are posted. Drivers claim work based on their own availability.
Some runs may be single-stop deliveries. Others may be grouped local routes with multiple stops. Pay varies depending on route size, stop count, distance, urgency, and tips where applicable.
Who This Is Best For
This opportunity may be a good fit for people who already do delivery, courier, rideshare, gig work, or other 1099 contract work and want additional local earning opportunities.
This is not meant to replace every other platform someone uses. It is designed to work well for people who already understand flexible, on-demand work and want to add another source of local delivery income when runs are available.
For full-time gig workers, this can be another stream of claimable delivery work in the Wilmington area. If you are already out driving for other platforms, local courier services, food delivery, rideshare, or route-based work, this may give you additional opportunities to fill gaps in your schedule.
For people looking for extra income, this can be a flexible way to earn without committing to a fixed weekly schedule. Approved drivers are not required to claim every run. Deliveries and routes are posted as they become available, and drivers may claim work based on their own availability.
Why We Use Independent Drivers
Hempire Innovations is moving toward a more on-demand delivery model because our in-store team needs to stay focused on customers, fulfillment, product knowledge, retail operations, and the overall store experience.
Instead of pulling W2 staff away from the store to complete deliveries, we are building a separate driver network of approved independent contractors who can claim local delivery opportunities when they are available.
This helps us keep the store running properly while also making delivery more flexible and scalable. Our goal is to have staff focused in-store and approved drivers focused on completing local deliveries professionally, safely, and efficiently.
Driver App / Delivery System
We are building an internal delivery system for Hempire Innovations to help organize local delivery work more efficiently.
This app is designed specifically for approved independent delivery drivers. It is not a public customer app and it is not for retail, storefront, packaging, fulfillment, or general business operations.
If we decide to move forward with an applicant, they will be onboarded through our application and internal driver system before being approved to claim delivery work.
Once approved, drivers may be added to our private driver channels where available deliveries and routes are posted. These may include single-stop orders or grouped local routes with multiple stops. Drivers can review what is available and claim runs based on their own availability.
The goal of the system is to make the delivery process more organized, clear, and trackable for both the company and the driver.
The app may be used to help with:
- Viewing available delivery opportunities or assigned claimed routes
- Seeing pickup and delivery details for claimed orders
- Organizing multiple stops into a clear route
- Confirming when an order has been picked up
- Confirming when a delivery has been completed
- Helping document delivery status, timing, and any issues
- Supporting age verification, handoff, and delivery confirmation procedures
- Improving communication between the company and active drivers
This system is being built to make local delivery smoother and more professional. It helps reduce confusion, keeps drivers updated, and gives approved contractors a clearer way to manage runs they choose to claim.
However, use of the app or driver channel does not create guaranteed hours, guaranteed routes, guaranteed pay, or employee status. Drivers remain independent 1099 contractors. Work availability depends on customer demand, order volume, route availability, and whether a driver chooses to claim posted opportunities.
How It Works
If you pass our initial screening process and we decide to move forward, you will be onboarded through our application and internal driver system.
Approved drivers may then be added to our private driver channels.
Available deliveries and routes are posted there as they become available.
You are not required to claim every run. You may claim work based on your own availability. Once you claim a run, you are expected to complete it professionally, accurately, and on time.
To keep the active driver channel organized, contractors who remain inactive for an extended period may be moved to a separate inactive channel and can be returned to the active channel later if they want to re-engage.
Pay Structure / How Drivers Earn
Drivers are paid per claimed delivery or route. Pay is not hourly and this is not a guaranteed-shift position.
Each available delivery or route will have pay associated with it before it is claimed, when possible. Drivers can decide whether they want to accept the run based on the posted pay, distance, stop count, timing, and their own availability.
Pay may vary depending on several factors, including:
- Whether it is a single delivery or a grouped route
- Number of stops
- Estimated distance
- Time sensitivity or urgency
- Delivery area
- Route complexity
- Whether tips are included or available
- Any special delivery requirements
Most claimed runs may fall within a general range of $5–$25+ per order or route, depending on the delivery. Larger routes, longer distances, multiple-stop runs, urgent deliveries, or higher-value opportunities may pay more.
Tips, when applicable, may be added separately or included depending on how the order is processed. Drivers will be told how pay works for each run or route before claiming it whenever possible.
Because this is a 1099 contractor role, drivers are responsible for their own vehicle, fuel, phone, data, insurance, taxes, and any other costs related to completing deliveries. Drivers are not paid hourly wages, overtime, mileage reimbursement, benefits, or guaranteed minimum weekly pay.
The benefit of this structure is flexibility. Drivers can choose which available opportunities make sense for them. This can work especially well for people already doing other 1099 delivery, courier, rideshare, or gig work because Hempire Innovations deliveries can be an additional local income stream when routes are available.
Once a driver claims a delivery or route, they are expected to complete it professionally, safely, accurately, discreetly, and on time. Repeatedly claiming work and failing to complete it properly may result in removal from active driver channels.

Important Role Clarification
This is a 1099 contractor opportunity for local deliveries only.
This is not a guaranteed-hours position.
This is not a W2 employee role.
This is not a storefront, retail sales, packaging, fulfillment, or general operations role.
Work availability depends on demand and what deliveries or routes are available to claim.
Selection to move forward in the application process does not guarantee ongoing work, routes, or pay. Drivers must complete our onboarding process and remain in good standing to claim available delivery opportunities.
Because contractors may have access to customer delivery information and other non-public business information, strict confidentiality and non-solicitation standards apply. Customer information may only be used for completing assigned Hempire Innovations deliveries.
Misuse of customer information, contacting customers outside of assigned deliveries, diversion of business, or interference with company customer relationships is prohibited.
