Shift: Night Shift – 3x12 Hours (18:30 - 07:00)
Duration: 7 weeks with the possibility of extension
Start Date: 09/08/2026
Certification Requirement: ASCP/ASCP-BB preferred; AMT or ABB accepted
Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and skilled Laboratory - Medical Technologist to support the clinical laboratory at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, with a primary focus on blood bank operations. This role is essential in performing accurate laboratory testing, processing specimens, supporting transfusion services, and maintaining quality and patient safety standards. The ideal candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of Medical Technologist experience, previous travel experience, and strong knowledge of blood bank procedures, hematology, chemistry, immunology/serology, specimen processing, and urinalysis. MLT candidates are not accepted for this position.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform clinical laboratory testing with a primary focus on blood bank procedures and transfusion services
Perform ABO/Rh testing, antibody screening and identification, and AHG crossmatching
Conduct antigen typing, electronic crossmatching, and immediate spin/IgG crossmatching
Perform transfusion reaction workups according to laboratory and hospital protocols
Thaw, cool, store, and properly handle blood products according to established safety standards
Process, accession, collect, label, and handle specimens accurately and efficiently
Perform chemistry testing including cardiac enzymes, hormone/thyroid testing, immunoassays, therapeutic drug monitoring, and tumor markers
Perform hematology and coagulation testing including CBCs, manual differentials, platelet counts, fibrinogen, FDP, reticulocyte counts, and other specialized testing
Perform immunology and serology testing including ANA, ASO titers, RPR, complement testing, and pregnancy testing
Perform urinalysis procedures including crystal identification, manual macroscopic analysis, and microscopic examination
Maintain accurate blood specimen storage, labeling, documentation, and laboratory records
Follow quality assurance procedures, controls, transmission-based precautions, and laboratory safety standards
Operate laboratory equipment and follow established procedures to ensure accurate and timely test results
Maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and laboratory protocols
Collaborate with laboratory staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to support quality patient care
Float within the facility and scope of practice as needed
Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient clinical laboratory environment
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of Medical Technologist experience required
- Previous travel experience required; first-time travelers are not accepted
- Blood Bank experience required
- Strong experience with ABO/Rh testing, antibody identification, crossmatching, antigen typing, and blood product handling
- Experience with transfusion reaction workups and blood banking procedures
- Strong knowledge of chemistry, hematology/coagulation, immunology/serology, specimen processing, and urinalysis
- Experience with quality assurance, laboratory controls, specimen labeling, and blood specimen storage
- ASCP/ASCP-BB certification preferred; AMT or ABB certifications are acceptable
- Strong knowledge of laboratory safety, infection prevention, and transmission-based precautions
- MLT candidates are not accepted
- Ability to work independently in a hospital clinical laboratory and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams
- Experience in a Trauma Level I or Level II facility preferred
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate laboratory testing and patient safety
