This is a part-time, FLSA non-exempt position with Carson City Juvenile Services, not to exceed 1,039 hours in any fiscal year, July 1 - June 30. Under general supervision, monitors the safety and security of juveniles housed in a correctional residential facility and/or work sites; monitors the safety and security of the facility and/or work sites; performs light housekeeping and custodial duties.

Education and Experience:
Equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED; AND one (1) year of experience working with at-risk youth in a detention setting or other similar setting; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Carson City Health Department Food Service Handling Certificate. (Must have or be able to obtain within two (2) months of hire date.)

Valid driver’s license.

CPR/First Aid certification. (Must have or be able to obtain within two (2) months of hire date.)

Successfully qualified with O.C. Spray & Defensive Tactics. (Must be qualified at time of hire or be qualified within two (2) months of hire date.)

Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:

General emotional and behavioral patterns of both delinquent and non-delinquent juveniles and the causes of juvenile delinquency.

General principles of working with adolescent groups and individuals.

Basic office practices and procedures, including using a computer and associated software.

State and local laws related to juvenile justice, child welfare and the court system.

Record keeping practices.

Must satisfactorily complete Defensive Tactics Training within six (6) months of hire.

Techniques for dealing with juveniles from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including basic crisis intervention techniques.

Detention security procedures and techniques.

First Aid, CPR, AED and OC Spray techniques.

Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Under General Supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

Must have the physical ability to participate in defensive tactics training and sustain the effects of O.C. (pepper spray) in the eyes. Must have the ability to physically restrain detained youth weighing over 200 lbs. Must be willing to work evenings, nights, weekends and holiday shifts. Work in violent, traumatic or highly charged emotional environments. May be subject to exposure to blood and airborne diseases/fluids.
