Full Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The CMA functions under the supervision and guidance of the Physician and participates in the multi-disciplinary process of providing care and treatment to patients and provides clinical support and technical assistance to the professional medical and other staff. The CMA is responsible for functioning within the scope of practice dictated by the authority of the Nursing Practice Act of the State of North Carolina. Individual must be able to manage demanding workload with accuracy. Position requires excellent customer service skills with patients and their families, other staff, physicians, vendors, and the public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Greets patients and visitors in person.
Check in and check out patients who arrive for appointments. Obtains necessary data from the patient or caregiver. Prepares the patient’s encounter for a visit.
Answer multi-line telephone calls during regular business hours, direct the caller to the appropriate party, or handle the caller’s needs (nonclinical triage).
Check the fax and patient portal inbox and triage or respond to questions and requests.
Schedule patient appointments in the practice electronic health record based on availability and ensures schedule leads to a smooth patient flow and registers patients.
Provide patients with intake and new-patient forms and copies of other practice forms, policies, or legally required documents. Assist patients in completing all necessary forms and documentation, including medical insurance, as applicable.
Inform/educate patients about medical office procedures and policies.
Collect and process patient payments for co-pays, account balances, and uninsured visits.
Facilitate outside referrals at the request of the physician.
Obtain and complete prior authorizations as requested.
Always maintain appearance of the facilities to include cleanly exam rooms and clinical areas as well as common areas.
Assess patient's general condition and takes vital signs and weight and records the data in the patient’s medical record.
Assist physician with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
Provide basic patient care as ordered.
Document all activities/interventions, patient/family responses, medication dispensed/prescribed, in the medical record.
Promote wellness by providing patient education materials, communicating physician advice/instructions.
Adhere to infection control/safety guidelines, and confidentiality policies.
Assist with telephony related to patient care matters including both incoming and outgoing calls.
Maintain an acceptable inventory of clinical and office supplies by placing orders upon approval of the physician.
Perform daily opening and closing procedures as assigned.
Review bad mail, obtain correct address, enter new mailing information into computer and re-send patient statements when applicable with corrected address.
Facilitate practice marketing by being the face of the practice and offering high quality customer service.
Safeguard patient privacy and confidentiality.
Help patients schedule testing, procedures, hospitalization, or other activities for off-site services.
Scan paper documentation into the practices’ information system.
Respond and comply with requests for information about regulations and practice policies.
The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to job position.
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Certification required for Medical Assistant or candidate possesses an undergraduate degree and is on a path to medical school or physician assistant school.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Three to five years of experience required, preferably in a lifestyle medicine or specialty setting, or undergraduate degree and on a path to medical school or physician assistant school.
Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate medical care according to individual needs.
Must demonstrate an understanding of clinical risk.
Must demonstrate consistent professional conduct and meticulous attention to detail.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other health care professionals.
Familiarity with EHR systems a plus.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
