Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Optometric Assistant plays an important role in creating an exceptional patient experience while supporting our doctors in providing efficient, high-quality eye care. This position combines patient care, clinical testing, documentation, contact lens assistance, and front-office support.

The ideal candidate is friendly, dependable, detail-oriented, comfortable with technology, and enjoys working as part of a fast-paced healthcare team. Previous optometric or medical experience is helpful but not required for the right candidate who is eager to learn.

Primary Responsibilities

Greet patients warmly and help create a professional, welcoming experience.
Obtain and accurately document the patient's chief complaint, medical history, ocular history, medications, allergies, and other pertinent information.
Perform preliminary testing, including visual acuities, lensometry, autorefraction, keratometry, intraocular pressure, and other testing as directed by the doctor.
Perform diagnostic testing such as retinal imaging, OCT, visual fields, corneal topography, and other ophthalmic testing after appropriate training.
Prepare examination rooms and patients for the optometrist.
Accurately enter information into the electronic health record and assist the doctor with documentation as needed.
Assist with contact lens insertion and removal training and provide appropriate patient education.
Help maintain an efficient patient flow and communicate delays or patient needs to the doctor and team.
Prepare, clean, disinfect, and restock examination rooms and clinical equipment.
Follow infection-control, HIPAA, and patient-privacy requirements.
Assist with scheduling, answering phones, patient check-in/check-out, and other front-office responsibilities when needed.
Communicate professionally with patients regarding appointments, referrals, prescriptions, testing, and follow-up care within the scope of the position.
Assist with inventory and ensure clinical supplies are adequately stocked.
Work collaboratively with doctors, opticians, front-desk staff, and other team members.
Participate in staff meetings, training, and continuing education.
Perform other duties necessary to support excellent patient care and the successful operation of the practice.

Qualifications & Skills

High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience in optometry, ophthalmology, healthcare, or customer service is preferred but not required.

The successful candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, good computer skills, and the ability to learn new technology and clinical equipment. They must be comfortable working directly with patients, able to multitask without sacrificing accuracy, and willing to help wherever needed.

Physical Requirements
