Paul has worked and trained in coffee scenes across the U.S. before bringing that expertise home to Akron. Joining our team means learning directly from someone who's mastered every side of the craft, from dialing in a roast to perfecting the finishing touch on every drink.
Position Summary:
As Shopkeeper / Apprentice Barista, you’ll play a key role in bringing Portal West Coffee’s mission to life: exceptional coffee executed beautifully, in a space built for connection. The Shopkeeper / Apprentice Barista should execute excellent quality coffee creation and high-quality hospitality by following the instructions and example of the Lead Barista. They will directly report to the Lead Barista and Founder. You’ll work closely with our Lead Barista and Founder, learning advanced techniques in espresso, latte art, and beverage craft while delivering the kind of hospitality that makes people want to come back.

Essential Job Functions and Key Responsibilities:
- Provides amazing customer service
- Enjoys interacting with team members
- Performs basic ingredient management (FIFO)
- Open and/or close the store
- Cleans and maintains the storefront, behind the bar, and the equipment
- Stock and monitor inventory
- Document and minimize waste
- Clock in/out and communicate effectively for scheduling
Recommended Skills and Education:
- 1 or more years of hospitality experience and at least six months of barista experience.
- Able to multitask effectively
- Possess math skills and can operate various platforms for shop operations.
- Valid food handler's card
- Navigating an iPad/Tablet/computer and necessary applications within it for daily operation
Physical Demands:
The Shopkeeper / Apprentice Barista is expected to be able to perform job functions with reasonable accommodation.
Physical demands include:
- Remaining standing in a stationary position and walking throughout the facility for extended periods of time each day
- Reaching, bending, squatting, and lifting (up to 75lbs); carrying 60lbs over short distances
- Must be able to lift 60lbs throughout the day
Compensation:
- $11 / hour + Tips
- 60 Day Peer Review to assess and celebrate progress
